What? Gilbert's always been a sell out. The difference is that he still does BRUTAL comedy on stage. Ever seen his live show? Seen him at the Comedy Central Roasts? He destroys.

I saw him live and he closed the show with people yelling "do the aristocrats" so he did it. The joke was almost 15 minutes long. Not a single second was clean beyond the setup and punchline. He closed his last standup DVD with the aristocrats. One of the lines was "the mother takes two live rats out of a box and shoves one up her cunt and shoves the other up her daughter's cunt, then the rats start chewing on the insides of their cunts, causing blood to pool on the floor, this turns the father on and makes him horny, and his son shits on his father's dick". And so on. He is still a fucking warrior on stage. No doubt.

Howard does lame comedy on and off radio. No comparison. Gilbert hasn't toned down his act to get network gigs. He gets them anyways no matter how filthy on stage he is. Howard used to be like that as well. Howard did ruin his entire legacy almost at this point just to get popular with the reality tv crowd and get more red carpet invites. That's really selling out. Ruining your on stage (or on radio) persona to fit in with the establishment.

Kinison did lame jokes on the Tonight Show. Did lame comedy on Charlie Hoover. But was a KILLER on stage at all times. Never watering down his main act. Paul Mooney has done lots of appearances on lame shows. On stage though? He's fucking vicious. They don't ruin their acts to be more popular with soccer moms like a certain fading radio personality did with America's Got Talent.

Bill Hicks did awful appearances on Letterman and other shows where he deliberately held back his comedy. I read his private notes around the time when Cynthia True was writing American Scream. Hicks said that he would tone down his act to get on networks early in his career if it meant getting more people to show up to his club gigs. One of the last notes he wrote to himself before he died was that not a single person ever became a fan of his by watching the tamer version of his act.

Gilbert knows this. Gilbert has two sets of fans. One are comedy fans who see him live and buy his DVDs and want to hear him on Stern interacting with Artie and Jackie. The other are people who hear him in Disney films or see him on network shows playing fun characters. There's no real crossover. He's not slighting his dirty fans by appearing in Disney films. That's always been Gilbert's image. The dual Gilbert. Reggie jokes and abortion jokes on stage. Voicing Disney characters off stage.

Howard was one of the few guys who only did the comedy side and never did the safe side. In the 80s and 90s Howard would always turn down lame Hollywood invites and focus on his show. No reality TV crap or anything like that. But now we see it is the exact opposite of course. Three days a week of garbage radio. America's Got Talent. No comedians on the show. Pathetic. Lame. Awful. Almost all comedians have sold out. Carlin did some lame shit in his day. Carlin's last film was a fucking animated disaster. Eddie Murphy left comedy to be a total hack. Kinison did some horrible lame shows.

Only Hicks and Patrice O'Neal didn't really try to deliberately sell out. Hicks said he always regretted his talk show appearances where they made him censor his act. And Patrice hated all network executives as he felt that they had no talent. Patrice once had a meeting to pitch a show for Comedy Central, he spent the ENTIRE meeting calling the Comedy Central execs hacks and joke thieves for employing Carlos Mencia. That's fucking awesome.

If Howard was doing five days a week radio with Doug Stanhope or Colin Quinn in the Jackie chair then his abortion of AGT judging wouldn't be as bad.

Hicks, Patrice, Carlin, Mooney, Jackie, Kinison, these guys were and are killers until the very end. Hicks died still as a fucking monster on stage. The last gig he did was one he promoted on the Howard Stern Show of all shows and he destroyed. Caroline's in late 1993.

Howard though? If his legacy's last days are three days a week of no comedian in the Jackie chair....and him doing AGT. Man....that is fucking terrible.

Gilbert doesn't strike me as a great cook. Better tune in early before he get booted.

I read your whole post, and I think you made a lot of good points. It IS sad, if Howard's career ends as it looks like it will--3 days a week,
always complaining about not wanting to be there, a lot of uninspired radio at this point. Maybe Malone will make him either make him
try harder or can him completely....if I was Howard's radio boss, I wouldn't put up with all his crap.

You know, some performers can do rougher material and also do good work for more mainstream audiences, too--Redd Foxx
and "Sanford and Son" (which I loved), and even Gilbert does really fun voices when he does the Disney stuff, etc. But to me,
that AGT show is just utterly worthless , for the most part......no matter how much Howard praises it, I still think it stinks.
I can't imagine why NBC thought Howard was worth moving the show to New York. All that hassle and expense for......??
