PRIMA Cinema at Primacinema.com has released a device that cost $35,000 that allows you to watch movies the same day they open at the box office. The movies cost $500 a piece. True theaterical quality. I don't know how long you get to view the movie or if permanently stays in your library. It downloads to the device with watermarks that can be identified should you attempt to share the movie. I am surprised that the studios are onboard with this. I guess they figure at $500 a pop that is same as 50 theater admissions. I know Howard is cheap and wants to watch the movies before they are released to the general public. In addition the "Whore" wants to be seen on red carpets. I doubt Howard would mention that he purchased this as his listeners would find out he spent $35K on a luxury item and he doesn't want people knowing he spends money. Just an educated guess, Howard will buy two of these if he hasn't already had them installed. One for Chimney Estates Theater room which puts Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood to shame. Anyone who doesn't think Howard has a home theater that rivals the best available is a fool. He will also get one for his New York penthouse.

That's a completely brilliant idea, and I wouldn't knock anybody who bought the device and took advantage of the service.

I can't stand it when people talk in movie theaters.........................there are literally three places in life where you've got to stfu: church, the library, and the movie theater. Yet this simple fact seems to be lost on a lot of people.

The company hopes to sell about 250,000 units within 5 years. The only advantage of getting a screener is maybe you beat the public release of about 30 days or less. The quality of the download is better than a screener if you believe what Prima is saying. Higher quality than a Bluray.

Plus, $500 is next to nothing to millions of people.

Shit, even upper-middle-class folk could pool their resources together; 5 couples, $100 a pop, and make a night of it. I know I'd put in $100 for me and the Mrs. to take in a movie at a friend's house the day it came out in the theater. Not every week, but surely whenever a movie we really wanted to see came out.

The $35,000 "entrance fee" is another story, though.

I think this is a fantastic idea. I hope, like plasma tv's of old, that the price will come down over the next 10 years and will be available to peasants like myself. I HATE going to the movie theater these days. There's always an asshole talking or texting, and I invariably get into an altercation with someone who won't shut their cakehole.

Time to cut out the movie theater middle-man. Studios obviously don't want to release a consumer product because it would kill the theater revenue. Well, so what, if you can charge a premium for home viewing? Most people go to the movies with 4 people or less. So, figure $50 in tickets. I think $40-50 for a home PPV of a new release would be a reasonable price. If you are a couple, they will actually make more off of you per person. And for a family its a wash, but you can cut out the middleman. Of course there is no more charging $10 popcorn and $8 sodas, but AFAIK all that money goes to the theaters. Studios shouldn't give a crap if that revenue stream goes away.

as if somehow it's your fault that they don't know to stfu during a movie!

I had this happen to me with employees of the movie theater I was watching a movie in!!!

two idiots came in about 15 minutes before the movie ended, getting ready for the clean-up, and they wouldn't stop fucking talking, completely ruining the ending of the movie for me!!!

Yea, it's gotten really bad. You pay a fortune to NOT enjoy a movie.

I haven't been to a theater in years because of that. Even if you decide to get up and get the usher and the usher takes care of it, you still just lost a good five minutes of the film and your mood is automatically altered.

Fuck that. The last time I saw a movie in the theater was on a weekday afternoon. I went when I thought it'd be dead...and it was. There were maybe 8 people in the theater and three of them were grown-ass women who decided that it was a great place for a conversation. I just walked out and chalked it up to a wasted ten bucks and a wasted afternoon. I was really tempted to you sell really nasty things to the women as I exited, but I thought better of it.

If Howard buys one he'll have to hire another full-time employee to operate it for him. There's no way he could figure it out himself.

I still like to think that Jon Hein is the one that is taping Howard's shows and doing all of the mundane shit that Howard doesn't want to do.
