Seniors decry ban on Christmas tree in their complex in Newhall

Residents in a Newhall senior apartment complex are protesting an order from management to remove their beloved Christmas tree from the community room because, they were told, it's a religious symbol.

On Tuesday, Tarzana-based JB Partners Group Inc. sent a memo to staff at The Willows senior apartment building demanding they take down Christmas trees and menorahs in communal areas.

The company has owned The Willows for four years, but this is the first time it's given such a directive to staff.

On Wednesday, two dozen residents in the 75-resident complex gathered in the lobby to place a neon green sign that read: "Please Save Our Tree."
"We're all angry. We want that tree," said Fern Scheel, who has lived at the complex for nearly two years. "Where's our freedom? This is ridiculous."

The Willows staff and JB Property supervisor Wethanie Law declined to comment.

It's a christian symbol but it's festive and people put up christmas decorations even if they're not christian.

If the owners of the old folk home aren't getting any complaints then leave it alone. If they are getting complaints, take it down.

By directing your statement at Jesus himself, you're confirming your belief in Him

I don't know anybody who associates a Christmas tree with Jesus.

It's a modern extension of ancient pagan evergreen rites. Pine trees and Holly stayed green in the wintertime, and symbolized life. Wreathes and garlands were used long before Christianity.

It's not Christian nor religious. It's a holiday theme, it's as religious as Santa Clause.

    Some Jew must have complained.

Christians adopted it for christmas time so it's now associated with Christmas which is a Christian Holy Day. It's called a Christmas tree not a holiday tree.

    Thanks for playing.

Plenty of Non-religious types & atheists put up a tree each year .....It symbolizes a time of year (In the past, the Winter Solstice). The standard decorations placed on a tree (Bulbs, lights, candy canes, tinsel, etc) have no religious symbolism whatsoever ... Growing up, I may have understood the root derivative of Christmas ... But the story of Jesus & Mary NEVER entered my mind during those times... A Christmas tree is no more a symbol of Christianity than a bowl of Eggnog, a plate of Grandma's homemade fudge, or a giant red bow stuck to the seat of your new Bicycle on Christmas morning is .....
