Some cultures do. My stepdad was Puerto Rican and they did, not to post them on FB, though.

When the funeral is in your living room, I'm figuring all etiquette is pretty much out the window.

"Can someone move Uncle John's coffin to the right? Boardwalk Empire is about to start."

It's weird to me, but other cultures do it. Who is to say who is right?

Totally inappropriate, imo. But it's probably cultural, like PK said.

The only "culture" that comes in to it is that of self-entitled fuckbags that serve no useful purpose to society or the world in general.

Actually, that's how wakes used to be conducted...because the term "wake" is rooted in the past history of people not really being dead, so they'd lie you out on a table and party around you for a day or two, just to be sure you were dead.

Also? People used to string bells from headstones, into the deceased's coffin so he/she could ring a bell in case they "woke up" after being buried.

Nowadays? the formaldehyde is used just to keep the tradition alive.

Personally? I find it a desecration and have told my family not to embalm me. Just put me in the fucking ground and leave me be.

Hence the term "Dead Ringer" for a look alike.
