she was the one woman who loved him for what he is (and he knows that deep down inside). he will never be confident of beth's "love" or even his daughter's love (he abandoned them for his aryan princess. alison wasn't good enough for a man in his position and fame). she wasn't beautiful and she represented everything he was running away from. she was a jewish suburban mother....he needed something more exotic...but little did he know that what can appear to be exotic for the moment can end up being an albatross. beth is demanding, needy and stupid. everything that alison was not.
i wish someone would turn the tables on howard and attempt to "analyze" him as he does with his guests. he is a pathetic human being.
Beautifully summed up. The final sentence should be his epitaph.
i'm split on this. clearly he knows he is hideously deformed. No person who thinks they are beautiful has all the plastic surgery and dental work that he has had.
BUT i do believe part of him also thinks women should and do really find him attractive.
it's a vicious circle....................
Howard: "tell me I'm hot!"
Beth & the various leeches: "you're hot!"
Howard: (thinks he's hot)
reality: "hey you ugly motherfucker!"
Howard: ......................."tell me I'm hot!"
You know how thick his unreality-bubble is........................beer can........................by how bummed out he gets when someone makes a derogatory comment about his looks.
He seems to think that he can think he's ugly, but everybody else must find him attractive, and that he only thinks he's ugly because he has impossibly "high" standards, but others aren't allowed those same standards.
Also, I think he feels that he must be good-looking because of the nutritional and exercise disciplines he engages in, like he's earned it. I think he's made up these wacky, almost arbitrary contracts regarding nutrition/health/beauty.......................like "10 almonds a day = George Clooney".......................but life has no intention of honoring those deals.
Personally, I think he'd be a lot better-looking if he was a better person; made good with his daughters, became a lot more generous and honest, etc.
Now on top of the looks fiasco throw in the gayness, and the inability to express it.........................even though he does in spite of himself.
It must be like 5 kinds of civil war raging inside him.
"He's so out of touch and delusional that he doesn't realize his entire life is built around extravaganza." - Benjamen
IMO, while Howard really is a walking petri dish of dysfunctionality, much of the speculation re the root causes amounts to over-analysis.
I just think that irascibility and mean-spiritedness are major components of his predisposed default behavior - and that after a lifetime of suppressing his natural tendencies , he's now able to reveal his true self by essentially declaring "fuck you, who gives a shit what you think about me or the way I interact with you!"
His parents and sister said he's full of shit about getting into fights. He never came home from school with so much as a bloody nose or black eye.
That's true and a really good point - could you imagine how upset Rae would be if he came home with cuts and bruises or a bloody nose? As overprotective as she is? The whole world would've heard about it. Howard has Narcissistic Personality Disorder - anything he says and does is done to make himself look the best - whether that be the victim, the overachiever, the underdog, the poor guy, the rich guy, etc etc. He says whatever suits him at any given moment. That's why he contradicts himself so much. He has no genuine beliefs or values except for selfishness and narcissism.
Look at his biggest fear at AGT - that another judge is going to be "unprofessional". That they'll be a prima donna and look for all kinds of special attention, and the producers will end up making the whole show about them. Something like say, demanding that the whole show be relocated 3,000 miles to the opposite coast because it makes it easier for them to get to work and lets them make more money. Or demanding a bigger sallary than the other judges who've proven themselves in the ratings and have been on the show longer. Or insisting on being called "America's Judge". He's terrified someone will try to take his spot.
