Yeah, the Russian jails are supposed to be brutal. But, you know, in this country, we will never go in that direction. So I'd like to see us adopt a system similar to Japan's prison system. It's just rigid and nobody takes any shit from inmates. Gangs don't get to congregate and nobody gets to socialize in the yard. There's daily calisthenics and the inmates eat pablum. The recidivism rate is among the best in the world...and their sentencing guidelines are less harsh than ours regarding most violent crimes.

Japan has yakuza gangs that have members in the hundreds of thousands, yet violence is extremely rare despite the fact that they have access to illegal guns and weapons. They don't do stupid shit because they know how shitty the prisons are and they know that their gang affiliation and street status means absolutely nothing once they're inside the clink.
