No charges for passing motorist who shot dead man, 22, who was jogging home naked after having his clothes stolen at the beach
A 22-year-old man running naked down the street in Florida has been shot dead by a passing driver following a bizarre altercation, according to police.Jandei Cherry, an aspiring musician and young father, was pronounced dead October 6 from a gunshot wound to the stomach after police say he got into a fight with a stranger in Hollywood.
The alleged gunman, identified as 29-year-old Duke Laguerre, was driving down Hollywood Boulevard when police say he spotted Cherry running home in the buff after apparently having his clothes and skateboard snatched by a friend.
The two men got into a quarrel that turned physical and ended with Laguerre allegedly pulling a gun on Cherry and shooting him once in the stomach.
Cherry was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Orlando Sun-Sentinel reported.
Laguerre has not been charged in connection to the shooting, and police would not say what exactly transpired between him and the victim.
The deadly incident has left Cherry's family and friends anguished and puzzled as to what had gone awry on the morning of October 6.
Mr Laguerre, who is also African-American, reportedly told investigators that he was driving west on Hollywood Boulevard after 5am when he noticed a naked man on the road.
The 29-year-old motorist initially bypassed the stranger, but then doubled back to check up on him, police said.
Investigators would not say what exactly happened next between Laguerre and Cherry, but what is known is that a tussle had ensued and a shot was fired, resulting in Cherry's death.
The victim’s mother, Auta Cherry, described her son's inexplicable killing as 'foolish and senseless.'
According to the bereaved mother, it all started when Jandei and a friend from work headed to the beach in Hollywood after finishing their shift in the Quarterback restaurant on the Dania Beach pier, where the 22-year-old was employed as a busboy.
‘He was running naked, yes, but he had no choice. And knowing my son he would have forgiven the man who shot him,’ an emotional Auta Cherry told the paper.
Cherry, who is survived by his 3-year-old daughter, was described by his loved ones as a free-spirited young man who was witty and had a sweet demeanor about him.
'He deserves to be known for who he was, not just a naked man running around Hollywood,' said co-worker Kaylee Martinez.
Cherry's manager at the eatery where he worked said that the 22-year-old had a sparkling personality and was a fine employee.
