Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to Star in ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ Remake (Exclusive)

20th Century Fox is excited about a new take from “X-Men: First Class” writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is in negotiations to star in and produce a remake of John Carpenter‘s cult classic “Big Trouble in Little China” that will be written by “X-Men: First Class” scribes Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, multiple individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.

A representative for 20th Century Fox did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Johnson is making a deal to play Jack Burton, an all-American trucker who gets dragged into a centuries-old mystical battle in San Francisco’s Chinatown.

Johnson and his producing partners at Seven Bucks Productions, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia, pitched the remake to rights-owner Fox, which released the original film. “Big Trouble in Little China” is one of Johnson’s favorite movies, and Miller and Stentz have already closed a deal to write the script.

The original 1986 starring Kurt Russell and Kim Cattrall only grossed $11 million at the domestic box office, but it is revered as a cult classic and a cable TV staple that fans can’t resist watching from when it airs.

Johnson is coming off an earth-shaking $54 million domestic opening weekend for “San Andreas,” which was also set in San Francisco. The film topped both the domestic and international box office and cemented Johnson’s place as America’s premiere action star.

Johnson will soon be seen on HBO’s new original series “Ballers,” which debuts later this month, and is also set to star in Warner Bros.’ comic book movie “Shazam.” Johnson is also lending his voice to Disney’s animated movie “Moana.” He’s represented by WME and Gang, Tyre, Ramer and Brown.

Miller and Stentz wrote the screenplay for Marvel’s “Thor” and they’re currently writing Warner Bros.’ upcoming “Acme” movie that will star Steve Carell. They’re repped by WME and Principato-Young Entertainment.

Big Trouble is one of my favorites too. It was introduced to me by a cousin. It was on tv and he said "you should watch that. Mortal Kombat stole everything from that movie."

Hopefully, The Rock will be willing to play Jack Burton like the original - a somewhat bumbling John Wayne wannabe - rather than John Wayne himself.

Never underestimate the ability of Hollywood to take something bad and make it worse.

Dwayne has had one hit out of his past 8 productions; at least one (Hercules) was so bad that the producers are trying to deny it was even completed. Basically, so far, San Andreas is a fluke.

Of course it will be difficult for Big Trouble in Little China to earn less at the box office than the original: if Johnson buys a ticket to this remake they will probably have earned more during opening weekend than did the original.

Every remake of a John Carpenter film has sucked. How on earth do they think this will be any different?

Same here. But as long as it makes money they will keep making them. I mean they are gonna make a fast 8 o_O Also (I might get shit for this), but I never got the superhero movies. Yeah I liked the first 2 spidermans, and first iron man, but damn, every summer they have one or several superhero movies.

the workprint version of zombie's halloween remake is really worth checking out. it was vastly different than the theatrical. first half of the movie was just malcolm mcdowell treating the kid in the nuthouse. far superior to what the studios eventually released.

Not true. The Rock has a better batting average than that just based on the Fast and Furious movies alone not to mention GI Joe and Hercules made money internationally. Hercules made $243 million worldwide. Mighat have sucked

That movie is probably my most watched movie.

"As Jack Burton always says, KNOW YOUR DAMN ROLE!" just doesn't sound good to me.

Ah man, terrible idea. It's not only Kurt Russell that owns that film but Dennis Dun, James Hong, and Victor Wong (who showed up in Prince of Darkness next year). Great characters all around. Great story with Carpenter at the peak of his powers. Why the fuck can't the Rock get an original action franchise
