Just 37 out of more than 16,000 welfare applicants failed drug tests during six months of testing in Tennessee, The Tennessean reported this week.

Though Republican lawmakers in nearly every state have proposed drug tests for recipients of government benefits in recent years, Tennessee is one of only 12 states that have followed through with a testing program. Its results are typical: Very fewpoor people seeking benefits actually turned out to have dirty urine.

Yet despite the dubious results, an additional dozen states have already started considering similar legislation this year. NCSL says that legislatures are looking at proposals to drug test welfare applicants in Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, New York, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas and West Virginia, where lawmakers advanced a bill in the state Senate on Tuesday.

Most drug testing proposals target Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the federal program most closely associated with the word "welfare." Federal law gives states some leeway to screen TANF applicants for drug usage. However, states are not permitted to make testing a condition of eligibility for unemployment insurance or food stamps, which, like TANF, are federal programs administered locally by states. Food stamps, which benefit 46 million Americans, have a much larger reach than TANF, which serves 3.4 million.

Agree or disagree with the policy, I believe it is a fact that it costs more to test than they save in the states that have begun.

I'm disappointed that Arkansas is not one of the states. I'm proud of my home state of Tennessee.

I don't know. Colorado finally stopped allowing welfare folks to use their EBT cards at marijuana dispensaries. You are on welfare put down the Kush and look for a fucking job.

Why shouldn't the free-loaders be tested? I have to take a piss test whether or not I am working a shit job in a deli, or working my job as a computer programmer with NASA as our biggest client. If I have to take a piss test to pay taxes for these fucking free-loaders to sit on their ass and do nothing, then they should have to take a drug test to receive benefits. If it's un-constitutional for that, then stop me from having to take drug tests to do my damn job. I bust my ass 60-70 hours a week to collect a 40 hour paycheck. Any lazy fuck complaining about getting handouts can shut the fuck up as far as I am concerned.

I'll tell you something else sad about this. My dad worked his entire life, from the time he was 13 years old. I mean he did man's work. Welding, pipe fitter, sheet metal worker, multi-state certified fire-fighter/paramedic (in his mid 50s). At 62 he has several major strokes and gets diagnosed with 4th stage cancer in his neck. By all accounts he should be dead. But he beat the cancer, and is fighting like hell to learn to walk again. And he STILL feels bad about collecting a disability check. I keep telling him to not feel bad. He paid into the system for almost 50 years. He fucking earned it.

Where the fuck do the useless douche bags get their sense of entitlement? It pisses me off to no fucking end.

So you want the taxpayers to pay more for the testing than they net in catching drug takers?

    Got it.

Not to mention they can just keep coming in and running up the medical tab until they get a clear reading and then just go cash the check to buy drugs.

This has never been more than a bullshit grandstanding issue for the Republicans to have a dog and pony show press conference to cater to their base. Most if which could probably benefit from being high.
