Todays my day to stay with the night shift so it'll be a 13 hour day. I don't want to stay tonight. Why don't people become machinists anymore? We could use some help. How many of you know what a machinist is/does? I don't think people even know this trade exists.

When I tell people what I do I get a blank stare. For real. People don't know.

True. I'm putting a new floor in the house and need money for new kitchen cabinets so I'm not complaining too loudly. But at 40 years old, I'm one of the youngest people I know doing this.

i used to be a machinist. after working for about a year, i realized i liked to make things but i didn't like to get dirty and do math. this was in the early 80s though so i'm thinking things have changed considerably.

The biggest problem I see is the pay scale is way too low as compared to the past. $25/hr was good money 30 yrs ago but it ain't shit these days. Considering the skills you need to do the work, it's a joke and and an insult.

Not for that kind of money. The only way you can make it is to own the shop.

    this

    So is everything CNC nowadays?

Do you need to go to a trade school or what? I worked several months in an old-school shop after college, doing peon work, and except for a couple of total shitheads there, I liked it a lot. Place went under though, because the owner couldn't keep up against CNC shops.
