note to douche bag kid.. if you are going to deface a 3,500 year old tourist attraction you probably shouldn't write your name on it

Why do they even let people get close enough to touch it, let alone deface it?

I mean, shouldn't they be expecting at least once asshole/day to pull something stupid?

It's sad. We have petroglyphs in the desert here (AZ) that are hundreds of years old. And they are like douche targets. Every idiot that comes along feels the need to destroy them.

When I was a kid, my parents warned us that if we touched anything, we'd get wrapped across the head; and that didn't matter if it was a museum or the supermarket.

    Parents these days...

the difference is that in egypt they are supposedly protecting and preserving their stuff; they really ought to rope off or put up bulletproof plastic to keep people from trying to touch it. that wouldn't excuse the parents, but it would deter kids with neglecting parents.

in Az we aren't doing anything at all. have we even put up signs stating that the petroglyphs are national landmarks or treasures?

its naive to assume everyone will have the same respect for such items, and given what we know about adolescents its naive to allow them to wander without leashes. ;)

i recall when i was a teen, going to the Met and running my fingers over the greek alabaster statues. they weren't posted or roped off and i had never felt alabaster before. i wanted to know what the sculptor felt when he carved it. i did wash and remove the oils from my fingers first though so i would not leave anything of myself on them, but i still believe sculptures are intended to be felt with more senses than just the eyes; i think i would have tried tasting them too if i could have...

There's a particular Greek sculpture here at the Getty museum that you are allowed to touch for this reason.
    It's all dirty and gross.
