Microsoft had no choice. After years of getting trounced in the mobile market by rival tech titans Apple and Google, the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant needed to make a bold move if it wanted to mount a serious smart phone challenge. Microsoft’s $7.2 billion deal to buy Nokia’s mobile phone business and license its patents is certainly an aggressive move — one that signals a new direction for the software giant — but given Apple and Google’s dominance of the smart phone market, Microsoft’s Nokia gambit may be too little, too late.
In many ways, Microsoft’s purchase of Nokia represents a tacit acknowledgement of failure. Despite pouring billions of dollars into mobile software and gadgets like the ill-fated Surface tablet device, Microsoft has not been able to find a formula to successfully compete with Cupertino and Mountain View. The deal is also a belated acknowledgment of the market’s structural shift away from desktop computing and toward Internet-enabled mobile devices.

The new Nokias actually sell better and better. They've overtaken Blackberry in sales half a year ago and their user satisfaction is high. Nokia makes very high-quality phones with unique features and looks and Windows phone is a rock solid platform that plays together with Windows 8 amazingly well. No other OS has that part down as well as they do right now. The problem is that people don't know about it yet.

Give it time. It will be an uphill battle for a while, but they will get back in there eventually. They now have excellent products are unique and that are good enough to compete with the competition. Nothing looks or feels like Windows Phone. You know it right away when you see it. Android and iOS kinda look like each other and the new upcoming FireFox OS looks like an old version of Android. I give them props for coming up with something radically different that also works.

    Look at this:
    http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/18/4534136/nokia-lumia-sales-q2-2013

The total amounts aren't enormous, but the trend is very positive. Can't argue with almost a 100% increase in sales in one year. It just needs to catch on, just like Windows 8. It takes time. They're very late to the game and they are one of the very few companies that can get away with that because they are enormous.

Also don't forget the enterprise users. Big corporations run Windows. Pretty much all of them. What Microsoft currently offers in terms of integration between desktop/tablet/phone is unique and it works really well.

But it's still new/scary, so people hold off now.

Give it time. They might eventually take over. I read somewhere that the "cool kids" in high school have Windows Phones now. iPhones are losing their cool-factor. People haven't been impressed by them since the iPhone 4. When I look around me in the city, all I see are Samsungs and HTCs with big HD screens running Android.

Nokia makes a good phone - only thing is, they seem to have lost the USA market - I hope they can get it back.

I got sick of paying through the nose for my stupid cell phone. When my contract was up I switched to a pay as you go prepaid plan. It now only costs me ten bucks a month. Our Verizon bill used to be over $200 a month, but then my husband started a new job where he got a company phone so we only have to pay for mine.
