4 hours, 3 days a week (sometimes), but how much does he contribute?

A few years ago I did an analysis of some popular political
talk shows on the radio, to figure out how much actual content
each hour contained once you remove the ads, the news etc.
Often it was as low as 20 minutes.

If you took into account recaps after each break it got even lower.

On the HSS, if you take out the ads, the news, news with Robin
(he does chime in here sometimes), personal endorsements,
precanned funny bits, playing bits from older shows, music,
other clips Howards share is down to 10 minutes at times.

That is not an average though, since sometimes during interviews
he might do 30 -40 minutes straight. he has done longer sometimes.

I havent analyzed enough shows yet, but I believe the average is around
    18 - 25 minutes.

The engine of the Howard Stern show were the in-studio personalities surrounding Howard. The radio show happened when they were allowed room to free-form riff.

At this point, Howard is just killing 30 minutes at a time:

    1. "Did you see what JD said?"
    2. JD impressions, some of them by Fred with his mic potted at 35%.
    3. "JD, come in here..."
    4. More JD impressions.
    5. "JD, what's with you, man?"
    6. More JD impressions.
    7. Fake 'fan-submitted' parody about JD that they paid some guy $5 for.
    8. "We'll return aaaafter THESE WORDS!"

No point in analyzing now unless you have listened to the show when it was good, and have something to compare. All bits are precanned and not funny. Analyzing current shows is maddening when you know how good it was in the past.

The quality of the show is a much bigger problem than the quantity.

Think if Howard had to do a show like Jay Thomas. :bigthink:
