40 Gorgeous Fashion Photos Taken by Edward Steichen During the 1920s and 1930s

Edward Steichen (1879 – 1973) was a Luxembourgian American photographer, painter, and art gallery and museum curator. He began by studying pictorialist photography and his early work expressed the romanticism of the early 20th century with artful, dark, and foggy images of the countryside.

His photos of gowns for the magazine Art et Décoration in 1911 are regarded as the first modern fashion photographs ever published. From 1923 to 1938, Steichen was a photographer for the Condé Nast magazines Vogue and Vanity Fair while also working for many advertising agencies including J. Walter Thompson. During these years, Steichen was regarded as the best known and highest paid photographer in the world.

Looking back on those days it seems to me the clothes sucked, the furniture sucked, the hairdos sucked and I'm not a big fan how the women looked either.

But the god damn cars were awesome.

Totally agree with you on the hair - oofah! And the cars - wow, they had some cool rides! Some great dresses, though. Not wild about the cavewoman bush that must have been going on underneath, though...

I've been interested in Steichen for years. He had a huge spread in CT that's now a park. I hike there sometimes. There's no trace of the house anymore. But the property, with a huge lake in its center, is gorgeous.

No question, beauty is timeless, but obviously not so much when it comes to "class" and "style"

Some are OK. If you have so many that you look like you have clothes on when you're naked then we have a problem.

    Not trying to be...

I'm reasonably satisfied with the quality and diversity of the historic, photo-based threads i've contributed to this website. Based on the feedback I receive after posting a new PB thread, many members seem to be appreciative. I've always been very respectful and very complimentary to LT for his great photo-based threads and posts - Don't believe me, ask him. I really don't think of our threads and posts as being competitive with one another - in fact, depending on the subject matter, I see our threads as being complementary, to the benefit of those interested in the subject matter.
