Some New Hampshire fourth-graders got their first taste of rough-and-tumble politics.

A group of 9- and 10-year-olds from Lincoln Akerman School in Hampton Falls proposed a bill last week to make the red-tailed hawk their state raptor. Legislators shot it down — one attempting to turn it into an abortion debate.

The students worked during class time to craft House Bill 373 to give their feathered friend some notoriety. The purpose was really to give them a better understanding of how a bill becomes law

Rep. Renny Cushing, D-Hampton, said remarks made during a debate on the red-tailed hawk were out of line and disrespectful.

Cushing spent 10 minutes addressing the House on Wednesday morning. He said he felt it was important to apologize and address the issue, even if others didn't.

"I want to apologize to the fourth-graders of Lincoln Akerman School," Cushing said.

Cushing said some of his colleagues offended a group of fourth-graders while they were at the Statehouse to discuss a bill they had worked on to name an official state raptor.

"Rather than talk about the issue of whether the red-tail hawk should be the state raptor or not, people went off and said the Legislature is too busy to deal with these things," he said.

Cushing said the students worked hard on the bill, only to leave disappointed and confused. Rep. Warren Groen, R-Rochester, was among those who spoke against it. He has been criticized for making a reference to abortion during the debate.

"It grasps them with its talons and then uses its razor-sharp beak to rip its victims to shreds, to basically tear it apart limb by limb, and I guess the shame about making this a state bird is it would serve as a much better mascot for Planned Parenthood," Groen said.

    That comment got international attention.

"It sends a message that we here in New Hampshire are mean to kids, and that is not the truth," Cushing said.

Groen was present for the House meeting Wednesday but didn't speak.

"It's a little baffling to me," said school Principal Mark Deblois. "All it would have taken is a simple, 'Maybe that was an inappropriate comment,' and this would all be over."

Cushing is encouraging students to get involved in state government, despite what happened.

"We need you to be included," he said. "You are important to us. You represent our future. Without you, we are lost."

Gov. Maggie Hassan said she plans to visit the fourth-grade students next week.

News 9 tried to speak with Groen about his remarks, but he said he had no comment.

    What a bunch of assholes.

As much as it pains me to say it, In this case the democrat shithead was right.
The douchebag who hijacked and blocked the kids bill should apologize.

These kids will get enough of real life after high school.
They didn't need to get their feelings crushed in the 4th grade.

Way to go guys. With all the problems in this country, it's good to know you are sharpening the political knives on the backs of a bunch of little kids. Because we all know that if you ban abortions, there will be no sex outside of marriage and we will all be Raptured up to the heavens.

Seriously, this article relies a lot on what Cushing, a democrat, says.... Sounds pretty much like a shit piece to me. If what groen said is grandstanding against abortion, everything crushing said is grandstanding as a partisan democrat.

This reminds of when Shedders take like, a thread on bran muffins and turn it into "well maybe if Obama didn't give more EBT and welfare funding to unemployed reggies..."

Dude, Cushing essentially wrote the article.

How is this not the same bullshit that groen is doing? They're both dipshits.

    Sad, but True.

That's why I resigned my Charter Membership in the RNC.

Reince Priebus is NOT a Conservative and supports the current group of RINOS.

"News 9 tried to speak with Groen about his remarks, but he said he had no comment."

He had his chance to clear the air but didn't.
Why do you suppose that is?
    Evil, biased, "lamestream" media??

Cushing wants you to believe that groen got up in front of everyone and started mouthing off on abortion. He didn't.

Was the quip about planned parenthood smart or excusable? No. Was the dipshit that insulted the kids by saying it was a
    Waste of time justified? No.

They're guilty of being assholes, not of being evangelists... Unless they're evangelizig their party, which is exactly what Cushing is doing.
