Musicians were creating some exciting sounds in 1966. Here's some classic tunes celebrating 50 years.

    I can't disagree about '66...but...imagine the previous 10 months:
    Byrds' "Tambourine Man"
    "Satisfaction"
    the Rubber Soul album
the Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited albums
and some of the best singles Motown and James Brown/Stax ever released.

Fuck yeah!! 1966! The Monks, The Sonics, Zakary Thaks, ? and the Mysterians, etc etc etc.

I consider the record this song come from probably the most underrated record of 66. They got the commercial thing but this record has a LOT more balls than it's given credit for and they were fucking cool dudes:

Like the VU & Nico record in '67 this is THEE stand out record of '66 for me. Certainly not the biggest seller but was so ahead of time and people are still trying wrap their heads around it. And they unleashed Psychedelia on a square and unsuspecting world. The Man made Roky pay with his sanity in spades but we still have some amazing records...this being my fave:

    Cheers

As Ive grown older and wiser, Ive come to realize that 13th Floor Elevators are one of the most overlooked bands out there. Hindsight is 20/20, but who wouldve thought they would be the predominant influence of the current indierock phenomenon.

Yeah......honestly took me a long time. I started buying the Pebbles comps when I was a kid but NEVER got into the 13th Floor Elevators for some reason. Even when I got obsessed w/ Spacemen 3, who are arguably a 13th Floor Elevators cover band I didn't make the connection. YEARS later a buddy of mine finally forced me to really listen to the Roky solo records and I finally started getting it. I'm still partial to the solo records but damn......you got to give it up for the Elevators. All easy records to sleep on but once you get on board hold on.
