This is like when Nat Geo goes into the most remote parts of the Amazon and finds the very last tribe of people who have never encountered a white man, they are the very last holdouts....the guy is a fucking Beat poet, still barely living in the Lower East Side where 2-bedroom apts fetch an average of $7,500 a month. He'll need to move up to the South Bronx, near Big Black.

"He performed in several Warhol movies, including an hour-long silent film that starred only his buttocks."

Here he is on the far left, in the heydey

I don't have a problem with the old man, my problem is with the rent being $7,500 a month for a two bedroom.

How the fuck do people pay that much?
What do you get for your money, a doorman, a shopping service, what is included in the rent?
Does 7500 a month put you in a great neighborhood with good schools or are you still by da hood?

I don't get these stories of how people get to keep living in a place without the rent going up. My rent goes up every year and there's not a fucking thing I can do about it except move.

    oh i don't know shit.

but i believe there are rules in place that he can't evict the guy, so the poor old man lives in squalor without heat and water thanks to that jerk. I happens a lot in NYC. he can't be happy with the millions he'll make on all the other apartments and leave this poor man alone.

Ben Shaoul, the young developer who has emerged as the East Village’s most despised landlord, is apparently expanding his real estate empire into the Lower East Side. In June, he bought three contiguous buildings on Ludlow Street between Stanton and Houston, according to city land records...

It’s a significant acquisition for Shaoul, whose high-profile deals (and controversies) have been concentrated mostly in the East Village of late — though he has developed properties all over Manhattan, including renovations of old tenements and new construction. This year, he has come under fire from his tenants and local community leaders for a variety of reasons: stranding an East Fourth Street resident without a staircase, ousting low-income seniors from Cabrini Nursing Home and dodging landmark restrictions by mere hours on East 10th Street, to list just a few of his headlines.

low income nursing home people were evicted!!!!!

Is NY the last city in the US that still has these ancient rent control clauses? It makes for some wild stories like this one.

...i hope he does just because he seems cool enough to me. developers are scum, they lust for money. one in florida was going to saw cut and remove "the miami circle" to clear way for his condo complex but the saw operator refused to do it, the public got involved and the miami circle has been preserved. so yeah, theyre scum willing to plow under human history to get to a buck.

In a lengthy profile in The New York Times last month, which opened with “Ben Shaoul doesn’t understand why people hate him. But hate him they do,” Shaoul outlined his M.O.: “You basically take buildings that haven’t been touched in a long time and you revamp them and you hope to get higher rents.”

i didn't know it was him, but this should be ALL you need to know...

Mr. Shaoul made his inauspicious East Village debut in 2006, the same year the 21-story Cooper Square Hotel broke ground and the legendary rock club CBGB closed.

i was going to guess this exact ethnicity, but didn't want to appear prejudiced.

    turns out i'm just smaht

BORN in Queens and raised in a tight-knit Persian Jewish community in Great Neck, N.Y., Mr. Shaoul dropped out of community college at the age of 19 to get into the real estate business.
After a summer internship with the Ohebshalom family, a Persian Jewish real estate dynasty from Great Neck, Mr. Shaoul renovated and began managing apartments in a building owned by his father, who had an antiques business.
