This was posted in June of last yea but....

    1. I love the Warthog
    2. Scooters piss me off

The standard ammunition mixture for anti-armor use is a five-to-one mix of PGU-14/B Armor Piercing Incendiary 30 mm rounds...

The GAU-8/A is extremely accurate and can fire 4,200 rounds per minute without complications. The 30-mm shell has twice the range, half the time to target, and three times the mass of projectiles fired by guns mounted in comparable close air support aircraft

30mm round next to a .30-06 Springfield for comparison

They can take out a scooter but they still can't take out the Taliban in their Toyota pick ups

I remember reading that during the cold war the soviet tankers really feared the A10.

The MD Air National Guard 104th Fighter Squadron is stationed a few miles from me. These hogs have seen a lot of combat action. The GAO has been trying to retire it for years. The Air Force won't hear it. Retirement is indefinitely on hold. The A10 will be in service for at least 15 more years until a suitable replacement is ready.

As a combat aircraft fan, the A 10 is my favorite. Designed in the early 70's by Fairchild, it's still the toughest plane in the
Fleet. Redundant systems allow it to be shot to Swiss cheese and return the pilot home safe. It's a massive 30mm gun with an airplane built around it. The two GE engines can take direct hits and still function. It's been the unsung hero in most US involved conflicts for 25 years.

Training flights come over my house. The whine of the two TF 34 engines can be heard well in advance of seeing the planes. Gotta be a horrible sound for the bad guys knowing you are about to be vaporized. It's ugly, slow and antiquated but the most valuable close combat weapon in the US arsenal.

Debuted in 1972, they are still the kings of close air support. The Air Force hates them, but the Army practically threatens revolts every time talk of killing the program gains footing. The Pentagon wants to give the role to the F35.

They had to put the engines on top because the exhaust from the GAU would stall the engines. That gun is an engineering marvel.
