A small % of hair metal songs were artistically pure genius

I totally agree with the first post. Motley Crue never matched that album as far as I'm concerned.

Nothing Motley Crue has ever done would even begin to approach "genius" as it pertains to music.... They are some of the most musically untalented musicians from that era ... I had the misfortune of seeing them live with Whitesnake back in the late 80's. They were THE worst band I've ever seen, by an enormous margin ... Their first album was catchy....But after that, they survived solely on their "image" (which all the yenta's, geeks & wanna-be's glommed on to)

    This.

Are they really a glam/hair band?
Guns N Roses were labeled 'Glam', look what happened to them....

Crue have forever been running with the 'Glam' name from there first album, when i think Glam i think Poison, Cinderella, Ratt, Faster Pussycat, Whitesnake, Warrant, Twister Sister, Dokken...

Musically they don't sound like these guys, they evolved and wrote harder/heavier riffs. Micks plays a hard 'Blues rock' orientated style that doesn't fit the 'Glam' sound....least to me...but to call them genius is pretty far stretched!

The whole metal scene after about 1981 was a huge mistake...a parody of itself

Pantera started out as a glam band and their stuff was pretty good.

I thought the early 80's was a great time for hard rock music... There was some douchey looking bands leading up to that, but the real douche-baggery didn't go into overdrive until Poison & Motley Crue started competing for 'Biggest Bouffants' & 'gayest makeup' .... I still remember one of my buddies showing me the cover of that Poison album for the first time... I totally thought he was fucking with me, and it was really something from National Lampoon Magazine ...

    Sadly..He wasn't fucking with me....
...I still use this album as a delineator for when a good music era started taking a real shit

I never thought of Motley Crue as "hair metal". They were a cut above most bands of that era, with the exception of Guns N' Roses and Metallica.

Some of their records had one or two good songs with the rest being total shit, but 'Shout At The Devil' and 'Dr. Feelgood' are both solid albums from beginning to end.

 Iron Maiden is not hair metal.
