A time lapse of ME at work. Oh, and you can see a submarine drydocking too.

    :cheer:

This is the USS San Francisco drydocking in Pt. Loma earlier this year.

At the :45 second mark, you can see 3 white trucks come and go, and then a pile of people looking at something. That's me.

And I guess seeing a nuclear submarine get drydocked is kind of cool too.

It was cool to see it IRL. We had the opportunity to come around the front, and see it from that angle. I wanted to take my camera out and take pics, but that would have been a shoot on site offense, so the thought didn't go much further.

Then 2 months later, this time lapse was posted on Deadspin. The angle was taken from the government building. I laughed when I saw it.

    Don't be dumb, Phil.

My being there was the whole point of the thread. The sub is secondary.

See how the sub comes into the dock, and just hangs there for a little bit? That is so that the navy divers can get underneath to ensure that it will sit properly on the keel blocks which are layed out 'juuuuussst right'. You could see the keel blocks right before the dock goes down.

Why do they need to dry dock a sub in peace time?

This particular docking was an emergency docking that was unplanned.

But all Naval vessels go through lifetime maintenance programs that include drydocking every five years or so so that the underside of the ship can be sandblasted and painted to ensure no corrosion. :grad:
