AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd has pleaded guilty to charges of threatening to kill and possession of drugs.

Rudd, 60, was due to stand trial on Tuesday at the Tauranga district court in New Zealand but he changed his plea to guilty before the trial began.

Rudd was arrested in November and charged over an incident on 26 September in which, according to a police summary of facts, Rudd rang a man he knew and threatened to kill both him and his daughter.

He was also charged with possession of methamphetamine and cannabis.

The drugs charges were laid after police executed a search warrant at Rudd’s home on 6 November.

AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd pleads guilty to threat to kill

Phil Rudd, drummer of Australian rock band AC/DC, has changed his plea to guilty on a charge of a threat to kill, at a court in Tauranga, New Zealand.

The court heard he had asked for a former employee to be "taken out" because he was angry his solo album had not performed well.

Mr Rudd, who had denied the charges, also pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis and methamphetamine.

One second charge of a threat to kill has been dropped for lack of evidence.

Australian-born Mr Rudd was arrested at his home in the coastal town in November last year and has since been out on bail.

The court summary heard on Tuesday that he had fired a number of employees in August after his solo album, Head Job, flopped in the charts.
Mr Rudd could be jailed for up to seven years for the threat to kill charge

A month later, the court heard, he telephoned an associate saying he wanted one of the people he had fired "taken out".

He later offered the associate NZ$200,000 ($153,000; £100,000) as well as "a motorbike, one of his cars or a house", which the person assumed was payment "for carrying out his earlier request".

Mr Rudd is then alleged to have called the victim threatening to "come over and kill you".

"As a result of threats made by the defendant, the victim was genuinely very fearful for his safety", the court summary read.

Mr Rudd's lawyer, Craig Tuck, told reporters outside the court that the charge "essentially revolved around an angry phone call - that was it".

Mr Rudd, 60, faces up to seven years in jail for the threat charge. Possession of cannabis carries a sentence of three months and methamphetamine possession six months.

He has been released on bail until another hearing in June.

AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd made a surprise guilty plea on charges of threatening to kill and drug possession at the opening of his trial in New Zealand on Tuesday.

The veteran rocker had previously denied all allegations against him, but changed his plea on the first day of the trial at Tauranga District Court.

As a result, judge Robert Woolff adjourned the matter after just 10 minutes and extended Rudd’s bail until a sentencing hearing on June 26.

Threatening to kill carries a potential jail term of seven years, but Rudd’s solicitor Craig Tuck said the 60-year-old would apply for a discharge without conviction at the sentencing hearing.

Rudd was arrested in September at his waterfront mansion in the North Island coastal town of Tauranga, with court documents revealing he was accused of threatening to kill a contractor and his daughter.

Police also found 0.71 grams (0.025 ounces) of methamphetamine and 130 grams (4.5 ounces) of cannabis when they raided the property, the documents said.

Rudd initially faced another charge of “attempting to procure murder”, but it was dropped after prosecutors decided there was insufficient evidence to proceed.

The identity of the people threatened has been suppressed by the court.

Australian-born Rudd, who has lived in New Zealand since 1983, appeared in court in a blue suit and said nothing to a waiting media throng, in contrast to previous appearances when he has dressed casually and made rude gestures to reporters.

His legal woes have threatened his position with AC/DC, although Rudd last year vowed to return to the rock group’s line-up.

AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd sentenced to 8 months home detention after threatening to kill ex-employee

Former AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd appears for sentencing Thursday at the Tauranga District Court in Tauranga, New Zealand.
There will be no "Jailbreak" for AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd.

The Aussie rocker was sentenced to eight months of home detention after Rudd pleaded guilty to threatening to kill his former personal assistant and drug possession charges in New Zealand court on Thursday.

Rudd, 61, dodged serious prison time — he faced up to seven years — but Tauranga District Court Judge Thomas Ingram said Rudd had a limited criminal history and posed a low risk of reoffending, Radio New Zealand reported.

AC/DC went on a 55-show concert tour in May without Rudd, promoting their 2014 album "Rock or Bust." Welsh drummer Chris Slade has taken his place.

But Rudd's house arrest will be in style. He'll serve it while wearing a GPS monitor from his beachfront home in Tauranga, New Zealand.

Rudd once dressed in prison blues at an Australian rock quarry for the 1976 music video "Jailbreak," which was featured on the iconic "Dirty Deeds" album.

His real-life murder plot unfolded after his 2014 solo album "Head Job" faced a poor reception, later described by Rudd as a "total f------ disaster." Rudd fired several employees including the victim, whose name has been suppressed by the court.

Rudd was sentenced to eight months of home detention after he pleaded guilty to threatening to kill his former personal assistant in April.
About a month after the August launch, Rudd tried to hire a hit-man and threatened the victim on the phone: "I'm going to come over and kill you."

Prosecutors dropped the most serious charge of murder-for-hire and the drummer admitted as part of an April plea deal that he wanted to have the ex-employee "taken out," offering an associate $133,000 and either a car, motorcycle or house if the person agreed to perform the hit.

When cops raided Rudd's New Zealand home, they found marijuana and methamphetamine last November.

Rudd largely ignored questions from the waiting media pack upon arriving at court, but thanked his fans for their "fantastic" support.

Big deal. I have a work-from-home job with no limit on how long I'm stuck here.

I didn't threaten anyone except for Dawg.
