    Ratings Breakdown:

It was the battle of NBC versus Fox last night, with the two tied for first in the overnights (and Fox likely to win among adults 18-49 because of older skewing Rock Center With Brian Williams on NBC). A one-hour edition of The X Factor dominated the 8 p.m. hour, with a 6.4/11 versus a 6.2/10 for the first half of the America’s Got Talent season-ender on NBC. While you have to give The X Factor credit, do keep in mind that the year-ago Thursday opener of the singing competition scored an 8.3/13 (from 8-10 p.m.) on 9/22/11. This is a loss of 23 percent.

Leading out of The X Factor was the fourth season-premiere of Glee at a still respectable (and second-place) 5.6/ 8 in the overnights at 9 p.m. Comparably, this was down by 15 percent from the year-ago season-opener (6.6/10 on Tuesday, 9/20/11), with retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of The X Factor (6.7/11) of 84 percent. The prognosis on Fox last night: Down, but far from out.

On NBC, two hours of the America’s Got Talent season-ender averaged 6.9/11 from 8-10 p.m., peaking in the 9 p.m. hour with a 7.6/12. Comparably, this declined by a notable 26 percent from the year-ago finale (9.3/15 on Wednesday 9/14/11). Unfortunately, America’s Got Talent got off on the wrong foot this season by opening during the traditional TV season, and the arrival of new judge Howard Stern did not help.

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!! I guess if AGT was doing better in the ratings it would have prompted Beth to show up. Even she didn't want this stink on her.

Howard should take his talents to america's got talent, next top model, project runway, the bachelor, ect ect ecy.

He could then single handidly destroy the all the shitty reality shows my wife watches do I can get the big tv back to play my video games (instead if having to go to the bedroom and play them on the smaller one)

A 25% drop is horrible, no way to spin it, and then they get the final jab at Howard at the end of the article.

If NBC asks him back there could be only 2 reasons

    1. To save face and justify the move to nj
    2. whoever is in charge is a huge longtime stern fan

"NBC executives expected a 50% drop this season. So they are doing cartwheels over the fact that Howard brought in millions of viewers on his name alone. Once again, this proves Howard is truly the King of All Media" - Jon Hein

When the early episodes of AGT lost to finales on other networks, Howard said that was expected because people had been watching those shows all season and were invested in them. Knowing him, I'm sure he'll completely reverse that position to explain why the finale of AGT lost to X Factor.

It's like daylight savings time. In the spring, the season finale springs ahead of premiering show in the ratings. In the fall, the season finale falls back behind the premiering show in the ratings. It isn't Howard's fault. It is daylight savings time's fault.

"and the arrival of new judge Howard Stern did not help" is being kind to Howard. So far he and Don have spun the ratings failure as the result of starting early against real programs with new episodes rather than reruns, needing a slow build (which never happened), and the network moving the show to different days so that no one could figure out when it was on.

Now Howard will have to go with the story of this type of show being a genre on the decline, so it's of course not his fault, and his 20 million listeners are anxiously awaiting his return to TV in another show.
