Alec Baldwin was arrested in New York City Tuesday morning after riding his bike the wrong way on Fifth Avenue.

Here's the crazy part ... it seems one of the factors in the arrest was that Alec didn't have his ID on him when he was riding.

We're told Alec was taken to the police station.

Sources tell us he was riding alone ... it was just for exercise. Alec's wife was not there.

The ID part of the story is kind of amazing, because Alec is a fixture in New York.

Why would he be arrested instead of issued a citation, the bicyclists here tend to violate a traffic law about every ten feet they ride.

He probably played the "don't you know who I am?" card. Cops love that.

He seems like the type of guy who will just pay the fine and move on.

    Because he didn't have ID.

That's the law in NYC, unless Capt Skank wants to chime in and tell me I'm wrong.

I'm going to venture a guess that he wasn't actually arrested, but taken to the station house to confirm ID. which could involve handcuffs.

Why would that be a crime? Because he was "piloting" a vehicle?

who me? I think the police should be out of the business of giving traffic tickets to anyone, in cars or on bikes. They shouldn't be directing traffic, or sitting at construction sites. They should be policing the city for crimes

He would have been issued a summons for going the wrong way. But how do they know who to make it out to?

Gotta confirm ID. That's NYPD procedure.

No ID = down to the station. He resists doing that, hence the arrest.

Who should be doing that then? Traffic officers tend to be the ones that don't perform well at the higher level work.
