Alzheimers any of you have first hand experience. My Grandfather has been diagnosed as well as my Great Grandparents. Today is rough my Grandfather is sedated every hour in a hospital at the moment. Someone I am so close with and got me motivated to join the Marine Corps as he was. Just in such a weak state and can't think for himself. I have to go to my CO tomorrow so I can get leave to help another Marine out. I have lost friends but never lost my best friend like I am now.

    Any advice?

Don't let them put a feeding tube in when he stops eating on his own, he will only get worse, best to let him go then.

Don't attempt to correct them when they're wrong, unless their dignity is at stake. This will be less frustrating for both of you and less embarrassing for the patient. For instance, if he thinks it's 1964 and can't wait to see the Beatles on Sullivan... agree with him. If he wants to go to the store with his underwear on top of his pants, make him change.

Make conversation as you would with anyone else. Even if they don't understand, they'll most likely pretend they do and it will make them feel good to think that you think they do. Talk about current events, friends and family, ask their opinion on things.

Remember that short term memory is what's affected so don't hold them to things they said yesterday or ever say something like "don't you remember??..." Also don't beat yourself up over altercations/incidents too much. They will get mad at you or at themselves. But chances are they won't remember anyway.

Sudden, abrupt irritability in the elderly is often triggered by a urinary tract infection. It's a strange phenomenon but that's how they affect us when we're old. With Alzheimer's patients it's exaggerated. So if someone's having a particularly bad day/week, have them checked for a UTI.
