The first "drone" pictures of cities taken by George Lawrence using a "speed" camera attached to a system of kites or balloons to hold up the camera.

Where I grew up, in 1979, they opened a 50 year old time capsule. They then put all the contents on display in the city library and had a multi-page spread in the local paper. One of the photos was a panorama taken around 20 years before that, shot from probably few hundred feet up. They posed the question to the public, how was this shot if there were no planes then? I was in Jr.High at the time, our home room teacher made it like a big mystery, how did they do it? I raised my hand first and said, sure there were no planes, but there were balloons for years. So they must have built a cameras that can fire automatically! She got pissed because I ruined her mystery she wanted to drag on.

This place is interesting, it was such an economic juggernaut until the great flood of 1951 brought it all down.

...i did some buildings in the city one of them was on 1st street. we were driving pilings and digging footings. it was obvious that 1st street was once the edge of town, a dump basically. bottles, shoes, saddles, lots of stuff came out of that small parcel a highrise was going up on.
