I've been all over this great big world of ours, but for whatever reason, I've never set foot on the island of Manhattan. I'll be back in Philly in June and was thinking of possibly planning a short overnight stay. I don't know anyone there, so I'm wondering what you might suggest in terms of transportation, accommodations and sights to see. I'll have a car, but would it be better to take a train up from Philly? Are any non-bed bug infested hotels that are within walking distance from the sights available for $100 to $150 a night? Please consider the question as if your 13 year old daughter was traveling with you - that may be the case as well. TIA. :)

Times Square hotels will be very expensive. Try staying down in Chelsea or off the West Side Parkway, and either cab it into Midtown, or take the Subway.

My best advice since you cannot concealed carry in NYC is hire an armed guard to be within 5 feet of you 24/7 except when you are in your hotel room. Then the guard should be just outside the door.

I've been to many 3rd world countries and never been robbed. But someone attempted to rob me in NYC in broad daylight. There were people around and he tried to grab the camera from me. When I punched him, he let go and ran.

The only way I will now go to NYC is either drive through and never stop, change planes and never leave the airport terminal or with a 24/7 armed guard.

Most people in NYC are thieves, murders, muggers, rapists or worse.

    All of Manhattan is walkable.

The trains are great for keeping costs down. And there are plenty of apps on which trains take you where - you will need this your first time.

Eataly is great if you like Italian food. Times Square sucks unless you have never seen it - then it is pretty fun. Empire State Building is kind of bland. Statue of Liberty will have lines for the boats in Battery Park that take forever - and then trip to and from the statue can eat up hours - don't do it unless you really feel compelled to see it. There is great and inexpensive food everywhere - unless you are in Times Square - then you will dish out the cash. The Alligator bar is great - every beer you buy earns you a free pizza. Corner Bistro is fantastic if you love hamburgers.

There is plenty to see and do without breaking your wallet.

In Philly - hit up Village Whiskey for awesome awesome food. Hit up the Mutter Museum if you are morbid and like looking at dead things.

That big storm a couple of years ago washed in a lot of gators. Be careful.

    Hey
times square is generally expensive. You are better off just slightly on outskirts of center city. You should 100% take train parking is too expensive also, and you will be right on 33rd street when you get off train....subway is easiest way around....for a two day trip I suggest:
1-leave philly early, get to Penn Station, go immed to Empire State building, see all from up high...may be lines, but ya never know
2-after ESB, walk over to Times square, don't pay attention to anyone, selling you bus tours, taking pictures with weird furry animals, etc....after you check out times square, go get on line at TKTS and get tickets discounted for a show that night....
then go to hotel, go to early dinner somewhere midtown (PM me for advice) go see a show...
3-Next day, make your way downtown, go to World trade center, see all the little original new york streets, make way to the Staten Island Ferry, i think it is only a quarter, but its the best way to see statue of liberty without going there, then just come right back on same boat.....
Go explore downtown, the village, some shopping in Soho...
that's all i can think of for now...:)

You can take the subway from the Port Authority up to 179th Street. Do it at night and you will see some local "color."
Just kidding. SomerSky gave you some good ideas. It's fun to walk around the village. Lots of nice little restaurants there.

Make a stop at the Carnegie Deli if you are not evolved.

If you want to see the Statue of Liberty take the Staten Island ferry. You'll get a great view if you stay on right side of the boat. Good views of city and harbor too. Best of all it's free.
