I read Dune as a kid so when I heard about this documentary called Jodorowsky's Dune I wanted to check it out. Very interesting as it tells the story of a film maker with a unique vision for this revered classic. In it you'll also find the cinema roots of Giger (who looks, and sounds, exactly as you would expect him to) and Alien itself. Throw in David Carradine, Orson Wells and Salvador Dali and you have a pretty interesting doc.

Sadly the Dune movie failed to receive its final funding so the project was shelved.

I...um...procured a copy for myself (be sure to get the subtitle pack). You'll have to buy it or...procure it for yourself, as it's not streaming anywhere I can find.

AFTER you watch that, check out The Beast Within: The Making of Alien. You'll see a lot of the same names as well as a mention of Jodorowsky's himself.

Good stuff for any fan of Scifi.

Yeah, it was the result of the movie studio's shelving the Jodorowsky project and handing it to David Lynch. The movie had a cool visual style because of the Lynch pedigree but it did indeed suck balls.

It's amazing haw many of the roots of modern scifi cinema are weaved into the Jodorowsky Dune saga.

You'll be amazed at how many familiar faces and names came from that project. A lot of the Alien guys were actually discovered by Jodorowsky. They were already artists but weren't working in cinema. These guys went on to create some of the best scifi cinema of all time.

I was actually just now watching part 3 of the Alien documentary on You Tube (pissed that it's only 480p -- why isn't everything at least 720 nowadays). REALLY good stuff!

Oh, I forgot to add that Mick Jagger was also cast for the Dune movie and was onboard for it.

Haven't watched Dune since I was a kid, but I remember liking it, I should watch that and see if I still like it.

Last summer, I "read" Dune on audiobook for the first time and really enjoyed it. Then I watched David Lynch's movie (which isn't a terrible adaptation but is a bad film) again too. This documentary spurred the whole experiment and I totally forgot about it! Thanks for the reminder. Will have to finally check it out.

Oh, also interesting in the Alien doc -- Giger makes it very clear that he's afraid of snakes and worms. This guy who painted some of the most disturbing art in the world was visibly shaken at the thought of a chest-burster crawling around under the character's skin. This, from a guy who has a lot of snake-like visuals in his art.

I went to the Giger museum in Switzerland a few years ago. It was wild seeing his work up close in person. Not to mention having lunch in the restaurant he designed and sitting in a booth surrounded by baby heads...

there is an Alien reload being made with much of the original production cast, although it plans to ignore the later Ripley arc stories. I'm assuming they will still use the Geiger characters because they are just too damn good to try and best.

If I remember correctly, Frank Herbert didn't want to be associated with the movie at all. He was quite upset over how poorly the film represented the book.

Love the Alien movies and Giger. Was almost gonna add ELP's Brain Salad Surgery to the favorite album covers thread. Awesome album cover. I believe his wife at the time's face was used in the artwork.
