OK, I've ripped some movies so I can play them on my Apple TV and be all cool and that. The movies I've ripped, for the most part, won't play in Itunes or on the AppleTV. They either stop and start frequently or won't play at all. This is in .mp4 or .m4v format.

I'm using the Apple TV 3 setting on Handbrake but bumped the video quality to 14. Other than that, no changes.

They all play fine on VLC player. Some of them play OK on Itunes but most don't.

I don't think it's a bandwidth problem because they won't play correctly in Itunes on the same PC that houses the files.

Google is not my friend in this case. Anybody ever had a similar problem?

Please don't tell me to get a different player. I had the WD TV media player, in fact, I bought two of them, thinking that they might have improved them. They pretty much suck.

I'd sure like a simple solution but any suggestion would be appreciated.

You are describing why I fucking hate itunes. Don't use VLC for testing videos. VLC will play almost anything you throw at it and does nothing to tell you if you have valid container/codec formats. It works TOO good. The only luck I have with handbrake and apple devices is to pick one of the predefined presets and touch nothing except maybe anamorphic ratio if they are squished. Mess with quality settings and things seem to go south on me.

I tried using the straigh preset but it seemed like the video quality suffered a bit. Maybe I should ding around with that again. I didn't know that about VLC. I wish I could stream a VLC player to my TV.

Convert it to an AVI instead -- assuming AppleTV plays that -- I had a similar problem with a handbrake mp4 on WD player

It usually works with the handbrake mp4s, but there was just something weird about those 2 files, and the new format worked

VLC just flat out works on anything. Doesn't matter if the file is to spec or not.

I don't know about apple TV but generally Apple stuff wants mp4 with h.264 and AAC audio. mp4 is just the container format and has nothing to do with codecs.

This. Plus isn't there some kind of limitation on .AVI that prevents most 1080P? I just heard something about that, have never researched it.

I'm shocked that you have had WD player that works. Man, those things are frustrating.

They do this shit on purpose so people get frustrated and just buy the video from iTunes. Apple/iTunes is fucking great if you stick to buying from them.

Not 100% sure. I haven't used AVI in a long time. I think you can have 1080 AVI's with Xvid?
