I've always wanted a Jeep. Have some disposal income I'm ready to burn. Do I go with an earlier model as a "side vehicle" or look at a brand new models to use as my primary vehicle?

I have a '14 Wrangler and love it. Decent gas mileage and the 3.6 has good power. Unlike the previous model (TJ) it is a good daily use vehicle......quiet and comfortable with a nice ride/handling while still being a blast off road.

It is worth it to me since the winters here can be pretty brutal. Fantastic in the snow and the soft top is great for the summer.

I hear the "real" Jeep owners (2 door) think the 4 door driving Jeep owners are fags.

If you use it as a second vehicle, I recommend the 97-06 TJ. Find one that hasn't rusted out. 6cyl. either the manual or auto (avoid the 05-06 models with the 4speed auto,(4rlte) they are modified fwd transmissions, that fail due to issues with the pcm system). The TJ holds its value. Ive had 4 of them .

Wranglers consistently get shit ratings for reliability and quality in various surveys, including Consumer Reports and JD Powers. I'd say get an old cheap one as a toy rather than worry about having to rely on it as a daily driver. And since the design doesn't change much from year to year it isnt like you're going to have to worry about an older one looking out of date.

I've owned a fuckton of Jeeps. The 4.0 they used from 91~06 in Wranglers is one of my favorite engines ever built.

They don't make a ton of power, they don't get particularly good mileage, but they're tougher than a $10 whore.

I agree get a 6 cylinder and manual transmission.

The removable hardtops are a pain in the ass to remove and store.

I think paying a lot for a jeep is silly as a "fun" car. Get one that you don't care if the interior gets wet or people climb all over the interior.

Also why such a fluctuation in price of used Jeeps that are around the same age? What should I expect to pay for a reliable, rust free, 97-2002, manual, six cylinder with a decent amount of miles?

How much weight can a Wrangler tow? Could it handle a 24 foot boat?

The TJ is considered the best Wrangler made.
But a lot of people think they new Jeeps are better.
The are a hair wider and longer than the TJ.

i like the newer ones [06 and up ]...the can be biult to be a little more stable.
But it is hard to beat the famed 4.0

Cherokee smoke the Wrangler all day long if you can find a good one.

FWIW, late '01 and up are the best 4.0 engines.

    Here in Texas..
your going to pay 17,000---26.000 for any Wrangler from 89-2006.
Prices down here are fucking ridiculous.

The older Jeeps with the 258 straight six are bullet proof, too.

Just recently I've starting thinking about getting somethin for just a fun, weekend, don't care if it gets dirty or scratched type car. My preliminary search led me to a 80-90's Jeep. They look cool and you can throw a winch and big lights and that type of stuff and have some fun. Obviously I don't want a money pit, but I don't mind investing a few bucks on brakes and belts and hoses, those types of things.

I guess I'll do some reading around on a Jeep forum or something.
