Based on someone's recommendation, I binged watched, "The Comeback" on HBO.

I never thought much of Lisa Kudrow - but I have to say this show - if you watch all the episodes is pretty phenomenal.
It starts off really slow and predictable - but like a lot of these cable shows, by 4 episodes in, it builds and morphs into something you don't expect. It starts like a traditional, herky-jerky, phony documentary style comedy, but it gets very, very dark by episode 5.

I have no idea how they got Seth Rogan to be part of this thing. He's in like 3 episodes, but has a real part.

If you can stick with it, I recommend you watch it all the way through - by the 7th and 8th episodes you find a multi-layered plot that's funny and upsetting. The last episode (#8) has things in it you've never seen on TV.

Pretty amazing stuff for a woman that used to sing about a Smelly Cat.

We're about 1/2 through first season and I was shocked at what a great actress she is.

She's basically channeling David Brent from the Office - but she's got incredible comic timing.

I'd rate the first season a B- . Watch the rest ASAP. In order.

It's a nuanced performance by Kudrow - playing a broad comedic retread of someone like Suzanne Somers, but she's really a very deep performer. I was really surprised.

The whole show is multi-layer and subtle. Since the shows are only 30 mins they have to introduce a lot of the plot and backstory stuff through one or two lines, sometimes spoken in passing. The last show is 60 mins.

The finale is pretty amazing - no explosions (actually there is ONE explosion) but incredibly rich in plot and poignancy.

One of the things I found facilitating by the end was the music used to close each episode. By the end, you realize the songs they are using were on purpose to emphasis each show's close or bookend the episode.

I read recently that this show is going win many Emmy's - don't know if that's true, but it is Emmy-worth. Kind of ironic, given the finale.

"Purchasing" it now. Got off the boat on Thursday and now have a massive chest infection. Half of the crew of 24 are sick coming home after working Christmas.

    Thanks Obama

I remember her playing John Holmes ex-wife in the film "Wonderland".

She knocked it out the park. No more Phoebe. She was hardcore.

I thought this season was good. The first season tended to be exceedingly redundant with Valerie (Kudrow) having zero ability to detect how awkward she tended to make everything for everyone. The earlier comparison to Ricky Gervais's "Office" character is an apt one; the difference is, David Brent wasn't "shrill" the way Valerie is.

This season got it mostly right, though. It took Valerie beyond her insatiable need to be loved (and "relevant") and showed her as a real human being. Rogen's cameo appearances helped a lot. And I think the guy who plays Paulie G was terrific; you could really feel how close to the edge that guy was skating.

Watched the first season.. she was excellent. Also saw her in Wonderland. Who'd have thunk it that of all those "Friends" she'd turn out to be the best thesbian?

I don't understand this fetish she has for playing unlikeable characters.

    I
watched the first season of Episodes, and will probably go back to it. However, it's really about the two British writers - whom I find unfunny and annoying. The word cloying comes to mind. LeBlanc is actually the best thing on the show.

It's startling how good he is on Episodes, isn't it? There's not a trace of Joey in his performance.

The Comeback is excellent. I think Lisa even has writing credits on the show and she's also an Executive Producer. I have to say some actual talent came out of "Friends." I even happened to see a screening of Jennifer Aniston's new film "Cake" and she is truly incredible in it.
