I took a new job recently and it really blows. I just want out. I'm really thinking about trying to find something one or two levels below where I'm at, just to relieve the stress and enjoy some work life balance.

Anybody ever try that? Any advice on how to pull it off?

I did. I quit my job after 20 yrs 3 months ago, I start a new one next Monday where I'm near the bottom but pays decent with potential to move up quickly if I so desire. I'll be picking and choosing what responsibilities I want this time.

My boss always says management was the worst thing he went into and wishes he could come back to work with guys like me. I don't believe him.

I was in an industry that has been downsizing for years. I was laid off from one place, called back as a contractor, rehired, then laid off again. I was making pretty good dough. After trying to get a job that paid close to what I was earning before, I lowered my expectations as far as salary. Then I lowered it again. I really couldn't find a job so I started my own business.

I did a lot of hiring in past jobs. I was always discouraged to hire anyone who was "overqualified." If the hiring people look at your resume, they may decide that you will only stay on the job for a short time until you find something better. That's pretty much what I fell into.

On the other hand, if you have a great network and know somebody who will hire you, go for it. I'd just make sure I had another job before quitting your present one.

As soon as my kids are done with college and have their own insurance I'm done with this nonsense. I could downsize to a smaller house and live on 1/3rd of my current salary and be quite comfortable with little to no stress. Just in time to get old and sick.

Get better at your current job and you won't have to downsize. Thats what I would do, but I have been told I am borderline ambitious.
