I think TiVo is tits as a DVR if the cable provider doesn't require a tuning adapter. I have a TiVo with Time Warner, and the stupid tuning adapter requires frequent reboots (twice a month or so).
What does the tuning adpt do?
Some cable providers jam more channels into their available bandwith on the cable by making some stations "on demand". The tuning adapter is the physical device that requests the channel that you want to watch, which causes the cable provider to start streaming that channel to you. Not all cable providers are doing this nonsense, so it may not be an issue for you. You want to ask them if they use Switched Digital Video (SDV) on their system. If not, no worries, TiVo will be great and has a nice user friendly interface.
I'll call this morning
