my IPad is having issues and my appointment at the "genius bar" is Monday. I feel powerless without my apps, bookmarks, prayers to Satan, etc. it's not as bad as leaving my phone at home and discovering halfway to work, but it does make me feel like a techno retard to be so attached.
How long have you gone cut from the online world?

I had to switch modems a few weeks ago, and wasn't able to get my internet to connect for a day and a half. Really simple fix, but I'm not tech savvy. My 16 year old son came over and had me back online in less than two minutes. Still, that day and a half sucked. It's sad how dependent I've become needing internet.

Sorry to hear that you've had "a bit of a stumble" with your iPad...

Seriously though, I felt the same way last week when my modem took a crap and had to be re-set remotely by my ISP. I had no wifi for a couple of days and was kind of surprised at how everything slowed down around the house...

nope. i can generate enough power myself in an emergency. both 911 & the last blackout convinced me of insuring i can generate and store a small amount of power. I also started watching for gas run camping items. I am ok without full power for about 2 weeks if i have to. longer if i become frugal. water will be the bigger issue.

about 2 weeks after my daughter was born, one night my phone just died after dinner. I had an absolute panic attack, and got up and drove frantically to the phone store, leaving monk and the baby in the kitchen. I freaked out on the guy at the store about how i needed a new phone immediately because i was home alone with a new baby. of course, in the 3 minutes it took to get there, my phone miraculously fixed itself. and I wasn't even cleared to drive yet.

It was pretty trippy watching how people behaved back in 2011 when we had that massive blackout that took down most of So-Cal. People were standing out in the streets just staring at their phones (which were mostly down) hoping for someone/something to tell them how to act.

A few high capacity portable chargers go a long way to sooth these worries and they are so cheap these days.

i am thinking of buying one or a Tesla Battery....
i generate more than 100% of my own electricity (solar)
but the rub is that in case of a blackout .. solar systems are
set up to shut down since they are not getting "info" from the grid for 'safety'
its total bullshit .. but a tesla battery would take care of most of that problem
    that or a generator ....

Definitely. And I turn special needs. I just want someone to fix it for me. I don't want to learn.

i travel with a 30 amp battery so i can recharge my iphone & ipad for about a month off that. i have a gas operated lamp and stove, and i have this neat little furnace that burns twigs and generates electricity from the heat. if i absolutely have to i will walk the 40 blocks to my office in midtown where i spent most of the last blackout. we have 6 months of diesel fuel in the ground and 7 diesel generators that can fully power the building with all the amenities (escalators, elevators, ac, xbox 1, etc.) for a very long time.
