i may have a heart of stone, but I wonder if I am alone.
From singing Christmas songs at an elderly center as a kid, I am horrified of the very infirmed elderly. This wasn't a nice retirement village, these poor people were in their last days.
From some of the kids brought into my elementary school, I also can't look at the poor people twisted and disfigured by disabilities.
I feel bad for them and know I'll likely be a sick old man some day, but am I alone with being scared?
(I sound like an asshole but am sincere)

I personally have grown to detest people that can't live without religion. It's a disability as far as I'm concerned.

    I don't get it :dontknow:

I just see people whose broken is mostly on the outside while more of us carry our broken on the inside?

I'm more afraid and uneasy of what I cannot see.
Crazy nutbags are way creepier than old ladies in wheelchairs.

i've made a pact with myself never to reach that point where i'm elderly and infirm......when i feel my life slipping away, i will end it with dignity. it's my decision....and i don't claim to speak for anyone else nor do i want to.

My dad got to be an old man in a hurry. He's in a physical rehab place after a bout with old age early dementia. So I now see very old people a lot and it's a sad sight. I feel outraged at the people who are still young and just refuse to work expecting Joe Taxpayer to take care of them while these are the forgotten people. It's a real life Driving Miss Daisy world. Black women taking care of, and often the only friend of old white people. But when a "patient" asks me a nonsensical question as I pass them in the facility (Why is my coffe cup red today?) I don't look to say anything to get me out of there ASAP. I give them the dignity they most likely earned and answer their question the best I could. It does help dealing with it.

Ringo told a story how in one U.S. city they brought severely deformed thalidomide babies to them with the absurd notion the Beatles could possibly help them by their presence! He apologized and said how depressing and sickening it was to see these kids and how they all felt guilty they wanted to get away from that scene.

If you believe in karma then you should be afraid of the mentally and physically born disabled.
You have to ask youurself what evil they have commited or will commit to deserve their fate?

when I was a kid I had a real serious phobia of anyone who had a cast, like for a broken arm or leg. It was to the extent that if I saw someone in a cast I'd have to leave a store or something. My dad even brought home plaster and we made things and painted it but it didn't help. The fear extended to people without arms or legs which was worse. I was terrified. In 7th grade my friend broke his arm and I signed his cast and got over it pretty much. The missing arms/legs thing is still with me but manegable. I've been in many many nursing homes and talked to many eldery and disabled people. It doesn't faze me any more.

what about them scares you? the thought that you are looking at your future?

if so, you should immerse yourself in it now, because barring early disasters you wont escape growing older and weaker.

age sneaks up on you: things suddenly don't work the way you think they should. for me its more a matter of feeling betrayed by my body not behaving the way i think it should, and then something happens that surprises and pleases me: since surgery on my leg i have to lift myself out of chairs using my arms only. The muscles in my arms and back are so far lifting me very satisfactorily and are toning up fast from the repetitive uses. i thought they would start slacking off with age too.
