Smelts are pretty small so I can only imagine...
I used to go smelt fishing on the lakefront in Chicago back in the day. It was a "thing" in Chicago. Not so much anymore.
They're so delicious when you dust them in corn flour and fry them.
Man, I miss Indiana. This one bar I used to go to had Smelt Frys on Saturdays. Those things are delicious breaded and fried then dipped in cocktail sauce. Nothing quite like the next day after you got hammered and gorged on fried smelt.
Yes! A lot of people used to bring little propane stoves and cook the smelt as they were being caught. It was great.

Yeah, I remember people bitching about eating frozen smelt vs fresh. I couldn't ever tell the difference but I had also probably drank a gallon of beer at the same time.
My friend's husband became head chef at my fav seafood restaurant and he was all, "yeah, I'm thinking of taking the smelts off the appetizer list". I told him not to be a fool so he left them on.
