I've been thinking of moving and simplifying for a few years. I live in the city and have 3 kids, a wife and a dog.
I've considered everything from moving to costa rica (or similar) or even just a few hours out of the city to chop wood, build my home with my own hands, spend more time with my kids, lay on a beach and generally get the fuck out of the rat race.

I bought my home in the city 10 years ago at the beginning of making some good money. Since then, my income has gone way up and way down (I've always worked for myself). It's too stressful and you only live once. In that time my home has gone from about $350k to about $700k. Maybe I should cash out, pay shit off and move on to something new. I certainly have some things to pay off (fucking taxman). I think the family would be on board for an adventure. I love the idea of buying a nice big sailboat and circumnavigating the world over a few years with the family (but then what?!).

Downside? I love where we live and would hate to give it up. Great area, friends etc. Would also be priced out of moving back unless I start making a lot more money.

Anyone ever taken a huge, blind leap like this?

Thanks buddy. I can't shake this idea that life short....not in a 'bad' way...just in a 'don't waste time' kind of way.
Some of the most together people I've ever met, grew up in an unconventional ways and I think it may be a good thing to give the kids.
It feels like 'something' needs to happen. I've always been a bit antsy and traveled around before kids.

I know what you mean. My kids are almost 11 , 7 and 8 months. They're my main concern. Otherwise, I think it would be an easier decision...I'd be gone.
I also know that I was bored as shit growing up. :)

doesn't canada have a million small towns not too far from major cities?

i have met pockets of canadians living in Mexico... the one that was doing it super right was in a town called

La Barra de Navidad... there were a dozen canadian families there that own restaurants/bars and live happy

Wes is right, the kiddos are the x factor. Are they young enough that changing schools wont scar them for life?!

Never had the balls to implement a change like what you're thinking about. I've got 6yrs left of paying for kids school, and we are already looking to move back down South once thats behind us.

If I stayed within southern ontario, I'd go a couple hours north to Muskoka or Georgian Bay (great beaches in summer...skiing in winter).
School is the issue up there.
[IMG] I'd love to build something on the shore.

Mexico's a bit interesting, but I'd have to do a lot more looking into it.

I'm not sure. The older one is up for anything...he's fine. The middle one I'm a little less sure about. The last is a baby, so she'd be fine.
They've had so many friends from school move away (europe, australia, the 'country', east coast) in the last couple years, they might even see it
    as normal.

One of our 'simplifications' a couple years ago was not paying for kids school anymore now that our areas public schools are decent...saved myself 20k right there :)

    Definition of 'Capital Gains Tax'

A type of tax levied on capital gains incurred by individuals and corporations. Capital gains are the profits that an investor realizes when he or she sells the capital asset for a price that is higher than the purchase price.

Capital gains taxes are only triggered when an asset is realized, not while it is held by an investor. An investor can own shares that appreciate every year, but the investor does not incur a capital gains tax on the shares until they are sold
