Husband got a Fitbit Charge HR as a gift...

Anyone have one of these? Saw the Crossfit thread, but nothing about this.

Curious if it works well and is worth keeping... and if so, should we upgrade to the Fitbit Surge?

I've had the Charge HR for about a week and I'm sending it back to Amazon. The heart rate monitoring is WILDLY inaccurate.

I do like, however, to see the HR during the night (it's continuous), but I know it's just an approximation.

Fucking forget about exercising with this thing and expecting it to accurately measure your heart. I wore a chest strap and checked this thing at the same time and it wasn't even close... not even in the same zip code.

It is comfortable, though - so it's a bummer - but not worth the $150.

    YMMV.

I was going to ask about one around Christmas but I was too lazy :giggle:

The Pioneer Woman uses one and lost weight if that's any help!

I have a Fitbit Flex...the band broke after three months of wearing it...cheap rubber. Other than that I was pleased with it. I especially liked the sleep log feature.

some ladies at work love it.
for myself... I am not sure about it.. I mean, I already know when I am exercising or not.. I am not sure it would affect my behaviour.

    Hey Vegasgirl... :)

It's a writstband that you wear 24/7... it tracks your steps, workouts, eating, heart rate, sleeping patterns and more. I think some basic Fitbit versions only track your steps, calories and workouts... fancier versions do all the extra stuff (Fitbit Charge HR and the Surge)

I have done a ton of reading on it over the weekend and see mixed results on the steps tracking...

So what do you do when the wristband goes... get another and link it to your fitbit account?

That sucks... for $99 - $300, you would think it would last longer than 90 days...

Stupid fucking gimmick. I'd be willing to bet that more fat people than fit people have one.

If you just want to count steps, a FitBit type device is good, and motivational for some.

If you want to really know exactly what you are burning, you really do need a heart rate monitor (strap). Many upload to the web so you can track activity that way. The heart rate monitors on watches are inaccurate, and you have to stop activity and press/hold down a button to take your dropping heart rate.

It kind of depends on what your goal is. :)

Edit: runner/swimmer here, so I've tried 'em all

That's what I am seeing online... that some of the tracking data is off (steps, etc). We thought the night/sleeping tracking would be cool.

Measures your resting heart rate pretty accurately. As someone else said, forget accurate measures while working out. Chest strap is still the only way to get those readings well. Decent for measuring steps, and the app is good if you are good about entering info into it (food, etc). Also, it measures floors climbed, which I think the previous models did not do. I tried this one and the Microsoft band and neither was worth the price for me, however it really depends on your needs and what you want to get out of it. Definitely DO NOT upgrade to the surge. I've heard it's buggy and even less reliable and the battery is terrible.

    Thanks - good info.

The heart rate was a big thing... so maybe the strap is a better way to go.

He's in good shape, but was wanting to do some race type things - thought it would be great to really track some of that data. Not worth it though, if the data collected is wrong.

    Thanks again.

Thanks for Surge info... sounds like it's not worth the extra $100.

Do you know if the Surge clock face stays ON all the time... or if you have to click the side button like on the Charge HR?

There was a spare band that came with it but it is too small for me...looks like it was made for 12 year old girl. I see that they now provide three spare bands in a larger size when you order a new Fitbit. Too bad they didn't have that option when I ordered mine three months ago. I think Costco sells them now a little cheaper than Amazon.

Had the basic one for about 6 months. Its shitty wristband connection would come lose from time to time. It died when it fell off into a load of laundry I was doing and got washed. Not even remotely water resistant. I would go water proof if possible if I ever got another one. And make sure whichever you get has a better "latch" system. It relied on friction and if you brush up against something it can come off.

I'd take that bet in a second. Everyone I know that has one is very fit - and just uses it to keep them motivated.

Not many fat people are motivated.
