....and what are you going to do when they announce a fix but it cuts the power of the vehicle or reduces the gas mileage ?

I have a feeling that they'll all be getting checks for about $800, and they'll have to make a trip to the dealer first.

    What an incredible scam.

And I feel stupid because I've been talking up the efficiency of diesels for years. Thanks, VW.

You might be right. I just read that they cannot change the software to pass the emissions test and have failed twice in the past year.

I seen you could lose up to 20% of fuel efficiency
so you'd be getting around what you get with a Honda civic or similar (i'd imagine) and paid a few grand more for it

    i'd be super pissed

I've been getting 37 MPG's with my Toyota Corolla. My Harley has been getting 47 MPG's. I feel bad for the people who were getting great millage from their VW's. Class action lawsuit coming up?

I recently rented a VW Passat and I swear I was getting 48MPG on the highway. Overall I was close to 40+ MPG.

This was with a gasoline engine. I couldn't figure out how it was possible.

Are they cheating with the Passat, too?

I went nearly 700 miles on a tank of gas. It was awesome.

They could add a DEF system that sprays the DEF fluid into the exhaust (this is what they do on diesel pickups) which does not affect the gas mileage or engine performance but it does cost you DEF fluid once in a while.

That wasn't reported. I estimated based on similar claims.

I also had a bad VW years ago. I bought a Passat and it blew up at 40,000 miles (when the timing chain broke, the pistons smashed into the valves). I received a really small amount of money for the engine rebuild.

Don't take my number to the bank, but don't expect to get rich, either.

Yes, I expect this will take a long time to sort out.

I suppose it depends on how cooperative VW is with the proceedings. Billions of dollars hang in the balance, so I'm expecting that they'll argue their case.

Cheap diesel prices these days will not work in favor of the car owner.

Unless you drive your truck or car for hundreds of thousands of miles diesel is a scam.

Its more expensive than regular gas and you pay and big upcharge for the diesel option.

That's a long payback time even at improved mileage.

The 2.0L TDI's have no DEF system, they claim the catalytic converter allows these smaller engines to meet the emissions standards.....which clearly it does not.

saw former gm ceo on cnbc this morning, he said gm, Honda and others have been wondering how vw has been doing 4cyl diesels for years...they thought they might have a waiver of some sort but their engineers have been baffled as to how vw has been doing it and now we know. this is a huge problem for vw, no clue as to how they are going to get thro this...attys will be getting rich. the gm ceo also says diesel hasn't made sense for years for consumers, doesn't see it continuing much longer.
