how do you go about finding one of those gigs?
Traffic is going to kill me.
I have been a telecommuter for a Fortune 500 company for the last 12 years. It’s made the prospect of changing jobs and moving back into an office full time almost unimaginable.
i do it occasionally. My employer makes it available as an option to accommodate needs: when i was unable to walk for 4 months last summer i telecommuted every day after the surgery. we don't offer it as a permanent job placement offering. instead we basically make it an arrangement between you and your manager.
You lucky bastard.
Im totally full of shit i kill bugs all day
You end up talking to yourself a lot.
For the last 7 years. It's great. I work in my pajamas and my commute is just down a flight of stairs.
yes; i actually consider it punishment.
When did simply working from home become telecommuting?
when it became normal.
Is working from home normal these days? I know there are people that do it, but I wouldn't think it was normal.
i think so: since 911 all the major companies on the east coast have established end-to-end global telecommuting capabilities as part of their business continuity plans, and now provide the option as an employee quality of life benefit. When i was injured last summer I told my manager i would be unable to travel to the office for a few months. I asked if i had to go on disability; he said "if you can telecommute, do it instead." Full salary > 2x disability so I telecommuted for almost half the year. We allow women the option of telecommuting instead of going on maternity leave: full salary is better than disability and we still get a functioning employee.
It's far more common than you think. Companies will also save money on office rent if the employees work from home
we are moving to these awful workspaces without offices or cubicles. just long tables with monitors and keyboards. it is an effort to push employees to not coming to the office and to working from home if they can. I expect that come next winter i will make > 50 people work from home when they all catch my colds.
I know that it has become more popular the last 5 years. I guess it's still weird to me that people have jobs that they can do naked from bed.
