I have one we got for emergencies like if the power is out in the summer. I used it before we got our newer HVAC system on really hot days when the main system couldn't keep up, and when the main system broke down till it was fixed. Worked fine. I think it cost maybe $600. I like the idea of being able to move it to where it's needed. It also heats but we never needed it for that. You just run a hose from the unit to the window to exhaust the hot air, it has an insert so the window stays sealed up. It kept a 400 sq foot master bedroom and bath cold in high heat and humidity. If you need a brand and model I'll have to get you that later, just let me know.

I have a Sharp 10000 BTU to cool my bedroom so I don't have to run the Central when we sleep..... My room is 440sf with cathedral ceilings and it cools the room great. It seems a little undersized maybe 12000 btu would be perfect, but I would recommend one if you can't use a standard window style.

I don't know how old you are but I didn't have an air conditioner until I was 18 and did just fine with a window fan

then again where do you live?

Make a redneck air conditioner for about $15 in parts ... don't skimp on the fan. Load it with frozen 2 liter bottles of water. i keep my shack cool in the summer while I'm working in it.

You were too busy jerking off all night back then to have trouble sleeping in a hot room.

My rooms all have ac, its a add on shop/work area.

California. Gets 95 - 105 hi, cool 60 for a few months. A window fan blowing hot air around is silly. I can just open a door and put a fan on.

If the power is out, how does a portable A/C unit work? I thought that they had to be plugged in.
