Apollo 13 was the seventh manned mission in the American Apollo space program and the third intended to land on the Moon. The craft was launched on April 11, 1970, at 13:13 CST from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, but the lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded two days later, crippling the Service Module (SM) upon which the Command Module (CM) depended. Despite great hardship caused by limited power, loss of cabin heat, shortage of potable water, and the critical need to jury-rig the carbon dioxide removal system, the crew returned safely to Earth on April 17.

The flight was commanded by James A. Lovell with John L. "Jack" Swigert as Command Module Pilot and Fred W. Haise as Lunar Module Pilot. Swigert was a late replacement for the original CM pilot Ken Mattingly, who was grounded by the flight surgeon after exposure to German measles.

    Great scene...

And Mattingly never got the measles but ended up flying as CMP on Apollo 16.

If I was on the mission my space suit would be overflowing with poop and unfit for display.

I've mentioned this on Dawg's before. I had the chance to interview Jim Lovell and spent quite a bit of time with him at a Wisconsin air show back in the late 90's. I've met a President, Woody Hayes, and plenty of rock stars but was never more in awe of someone than Lovell. (Although Woody was close) The whole time I was talking to him, my head kept saying to me, "This guy went to the Moon and then drove a broken down VW Bus all the way back!"

FTR, he was completely cool and down to earth.

No doubt. What a nightmare that must've been. You're in freaking space with no where to go or get help and if EVERYTHING from the men helping on Earth did not go right, they would just floated off and died. Crazy stuff.

I'm envious!!! I have a 1978 Celestron 8 - serial # 400 - and I do most of my "driving" & guiding manually as opposed to the great computer-driven set up you have, xavier, but at least apps like "Distant Suns" make life easier than working with paper maps and red-screened flashlights.

And tomorrow is the 53rd anniversary of John Glenn's Mercury flight - remarkable man and the only surviving Mercury astronaut.

I went to the Air & Space Museum and saw John Glenn's module. It was basically an oversized trunk. And he was in outer space in that? My admiration for those guys' bravery skyrocketed.

You know it is a good movie that when you watch it for the first time and you know how the real story ends and you are still on the edge of your seat the whole movie.
