It's a start.

[h=1]CEO Tim Cook says Apple will build some Macs in U.S. next year
[/h] [h=2] Cook makes the pledge as Apple faces increasing criticism for working conditions in overseas manufacturing facilities run by its suppliers.[/h]Bowing to pressure from consumer groups and government officials, Apple Inc. said it will bring some manufacturing of its computers back to the United States starting next year.
Chief Executive Tim Cook made the announcement Thursday in interviews with Bloomberg Businessweek and NBC, saying the Cupertino, Calif., company would invest $100 million to build some Macs domestically.

"We've been working on this for a long time, and we were getting closer to it," he told Bloomberg Businessweek. "It will happen in 2013. We're really proud of it. We could have quickly maybe done just assembly, but it's broader because we wanted to do something more substantial."
Cook made the pledge as the technology company faces increasing criticism for working conditions in overseas manufacturing facilities run by its suppliers, particularly those owned by Foxconn.

It's a small part of their overall business. Make the iPad or iPhone in the U.S and then I will be impressed. I guess even a little is better than nothing. :dontknow:

the reason Apple makes so much money is they have their products made in China for practically nothing, then sell them to suckers in the US for double the price of very similar products made by competitors. Thats why fanboys fail. $1800 laptop? really

"assembled" in the USA can mean as little as adding instructions and documentation to the boxes that come over from China.

Some union is salivating right now at the prospect of extorting apple out of marbles. Chgo begged walmart to build in the city. subsequently there have been demonstrations by employees demanding a union, higher wages and days off during black friday.

and if they do that with Apple, it becomes the public justification for them to move the jobs back oversees.

This is a good thing to hear, but there is an entire mindset that needs to change for any progress to be made.

Americans need to be willing to spend more to buy American. The people that bitch about everything being made in China are the first to try to get a lower price on whatever they are buying. I deal with it every day. I offer them the made in America version for 350.00 or the Chinese version for 200.00. Guess what they pick EVERY time? I'm guilty too, because I'm willing to sell the Chinese product. I make the same profit either way.

I could write a book on here about corporations outsourcing in the name of profits to shareholders...otherwise, see the last paragraph.

Throw the shitbags out of Washington. Mitch McConnell is the fucking house leader and has amassed enormous wealth through his father-in-law who just so happens to own a gigantic shipping company that sends Chinese products to the US. Does anybody believe that Mitch is looking out for a single one of his constituents in Kentucky?

/rant. Sorry

i tried this already: i spent more to buy american air conditioner and it was a piece of crap that failed within 3 months. I then spent the same amount to buy a chinese air conditioner / heater and it works great and has more features (and it uses less electricity to cool and heat better than the american brand).

its a two way street: american companies have to agree to produce extremely high quality and durable products again. only then will people be willing to pay more to buy american.

This is how it needs to happen. Not laws, not mandates, not government. People need to decide that they are willing to give up a little of the things they prefer in life if they think outsourcing to nations where there is no equal exchange of trade is not good for our nation. They need to try to buy products made here. It's not always easy to do, cars are assembled from parts made all over the world. Some items are nearly impossible to find from domestic sources. But if manufacturers of goods see "made in the USA" as a selling point again this could go a long way towards improving the long term employment situation here.

It's going to be forced on us eventually for macroeconomic reasons, but better to start now.

Now, if you'll excuse me I have to go get in my Volvo XC60 and head to Target.
