The latest software update for iPhone 6 handsets is allegedly rendering the devices useless if it detects repairs not carried out by Apple.

The problem is known as "error 53" and has appeared in Apple products before.

The Guardian reports that users' phones were disabled after the Touch ID home button was repaired by a non-Apple engineer.

The issue appears to arise once devices have been updated to the latest operating system, iOS 9.

In its report, the Guardian cites the experiences of a freelance photographer, Antonio Olmos, who says the problem occurred on his phone after he upgraded its software.

"When Olmos, who says he has spent thousands of pounds on Apple products over the years, took it to an Apple store in London, staff told him there was nothing they could do, and that his phone was now junk," the paper notes

Any phone manufacturer that designs their handsets so you cannot remove the battery can go fuck themselves.

    Apple's response.

“We protect fingerprint data using a secure enclave, which is uniquely paired to the touch ID sensor. When iPhone is serviced by an authorised Apple service provider or Apple retail store for changes that affect the touch ID sensor, the pairing is re-validated. This check ensures the device and the iOS features related to touch ID remain secure. Without this unique pairing, a malicious touch ID sensor could be substituted, thereby gaining access to the secure enclave. When iOS detects that the pairing fails, touch ID, including Apple Pay, is disabled so the device remains secure.”

She adds: “When an iPhone is serviced by an unauthorized repair provider, faulty screens or other invalid components that affect the touch ID sensor could cause the check to fail if the pairing cannot be validated. With a subsequent update or restore, additional security checks result in an ‘error 53’ being displayed … If a customer encounters an unrecoverable error 53, we recommend contacting Apple support.”

Their response is valid. How do you keep the integrity of the finger print security intact after an unauthorized repair? I do agree that having software that bricks the phone is stupid. What they should do is just disable the finger print sensor.

You should be able to have the screen fixed anywhere. Not the fingerprint sensor/home button.

    So...it's not so valid afterall?

They can fuck themselves in the name of "security". They constantly put sub-par products just so they can sell you an update that was probably on the list of things that should have been implemented since day one. I won't ever get an iPhone. The company is real fucking smug and Apple FanBoys/Girls are fucking retards.

I agree, they store fingerprint information in a secure way. By allowing it to be changed by a company you completely bypass that security feature. I login to my bank account via finger print.

But Apple really needs to work on having phone that won't break so often. I'm on my third and I need a new one.

I've clusterfucked the chart, but their stock is down about 23% in the past 3 months, if that helps.

I bought my kids iphones and don't mess with contract stuff. They were around 1500+ for two if I remember.
Teens, 16 and 18 (you should see my car insurance bill)
I have a Galaxy note 5 (I think) and it's physically way more durable
It even tumbled out of a Cat D-9 and hit pavement.

They have broken screens (often) and seem to have charging port problems.

I'm not anti iphone, people love them for a reason. But instead of continually making shit thinner, they should spend more time making them durable.
I don't need (or want) a phone the width of a playing card.

Why such expensive phones for kids? Functionally a $238 Samsung Galaxy 4 works about the same. And looks better, if that's what they care about. When you're walking around with $750 in your pocket, you then start having to insure it ($7/month or so). It adds up.

My wife wants a Note 5 for work. You like yours?
