    Hi guys.
Our stove broke down (it was > 30 years old). Just wondering if the new style are as robust and long lasting.. or should I go for the old fashioned curly element kind again.

...mine was in the house when i got here 10 years ago. im not sure but i think you can replace tired burners under the glass if need be. when you say its broken does it not get hot at all? if so have you checked the circuit breaker?

I don't think anything lasts 30 years anymore, but my glass top electric stove is 18 years old and fine, I want a new one, and can't justify buying one :jj:

We only have electric here too and the smooth top ones are fine. They just take some getting used to, one of my burners runs very hot even when turned down.
Don't go back to the curly burners! I clean mine with dish soap and water and after that wipe down with Windex, works for me!

I love gas stoves so much. I spent years using electric and refuse to go back to that slowness.

We have electric glass top and love it. Although as mentioned above, keeping it looking spotless takes daily effort. I would get another glasstop stove without hesitation if gas wasn't an option. I'd go with gas if possible.

If you don't have to replace a lot of pans, look into an induction stove top. They cook extremely fast, the top doesn't get hot either

Glass top here for three years and running. Assuming you don't drop your bar bells and horse shoe anvil on it, you should be ok for many, many years. They are pretty well made.

(Actually I prefer gas, but electric only in my condo. Frankly, the only good thing about electric is the glass top. It looks great if you have granite counter tops, and cleaning it is as hard as spraying some glass cleaner and wiping. I would hate to have to clean burner wells again.)

I'm sure they last just as long ... the technology is the same (I think). We had a glass top unit in our last house, as well as our new house and never had any problems. The tops will scratch though if not careful. I scratched our brand new one by shaking a pan back and forth on it. My fault I guess, but you should ask them about it before you buy.
