    Cool Story Bro

I had been out of the military about 6 months, driving around Cali, beating up hippie surfers and loving their women. Me and a bud were coming back from somewhere and got caught up in a traffic jam, found out the jam was due to the California Jam at the speedway. We went with everyone else, never even having heard about it and not knowing what to expect.

About 8-10 acts, started at 10am or so, about 95 degrees, no clouds. 200,000+ people. Two speaker towers 1/4 mile from the stage for the first quadrophonic concert, and it was fucking loud

Last 3 acts: Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Emerson Lake and Palmer

Right when Black Sabbath started we dropped some purple acid.

When E.L.P was coming to the end of their show this happened: Kieth playing a spinning grand piano 50 feet over the stage (go to 46:30)

I freaked the fuck out as I was trippin my balls off. This whole day was my best rock and roll experience, and I have seen them all. Howard talked about this once years ago

    Holy shit...

As FZ might say, 'You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore'.

    From Wiki:

At the end of the show, the guitarist Ritchie Blackmore threw a number of guitars, amplifier and speaker cabinets out into the audience and attacked one of the network's video cameras (which had been getting between him and the audience) with a guitar. Later on, a mishap with a pyrotechnic effect caused one of Blackmore's amplifiers to explode, which briefly set the stage on fire. The group had to leave the concert by helicopter to avoid a possibly ugly confrontation with furious fire marshals and ABC-TV executives (and potential arrest for the pyrotechnics). The damage to the camera was estimated to be $10,000, later settled by the managers.

Or, as anyone familiar with Ritchie Blackmore would say, "It was a pretty uneventful Saturday for the Deep Purple guitarist...."

When it comes to the act of smashing or blowing up their equipment and throwing it off the stage, they are all posers!

    Here were the originals:

Here is what's there today. I was born in 1980 and didn't even know this place or concert existed, but it's kinda sad. :nocheer:
