I made "Hoppin' John" one year. That was one long, dangerous year. Sometimes I think making that dish gave me enough luck to get to the next year in one piece. Black-eyed peas, greens, a ham bone, I think...

My mom does this. Growing up I though BEP's were disgusting. Now I don't mind em at all.

My small town was originally mostly Dutch. I guess it's a good luck tradition to eat spare ribs and sauerkraut on New Years Day.

Just finished putting the Hoppin' John (blackeye peas, ham hock, onion, celery, bell pepper, jalapeno, garlic, thyme, bay leaf, cajun seasoning and water to cover) into the crock pot to simmer low overnight. Will toast the New Year in a few, plan on being asleep well before midnight. Traditional low country/soul food. Because it's good.

that is not normal foods here so we would consider the cornbread (or johnnycakes, since that looks like it was made in a skillet) a delicacy.

when i was in school my gf made me homeny grits. i did not know what to do with it.

The local Germans do pork and sauerkraut. The Irish do Corned beef and cabbage. I will do a couple shots too.
