NY POST -- Dozens of city scofflaws — ranging from a couple that enjoyed a bottle of wine in the park to a man who blasted Jay-Z too loud in his car — were given salvation yesterday in a Brooklyn church, where many of their cases were tossed.

“People can come here to resurrect themselves,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes, who created the Safe Surrender program so small-time offenders could resolve their cases. “I was shocked to learn that there are a couple of hundred thousand people in Brooklyn with warrants for their arrest.”

It was the sixth Safe Surrender since the program launched a year ago.

The atmosphere was more like a party than a courtroom, said Zo Vasquez, who was busted for drinking wine in the park.

“I wasn’t there long at all and the church provided entertainment,” said Vasquez. “A woman was singing and danced with my boyfriend and then there was African dancers.

“The public defender was really nice, and then I saw the judge for not even 10 seconds and it was dismissed.” Shontay Holland, 20, of Bedford-Stuyvesant, was arrested for cursing out a cop on the subway, but the judge tossed the fine.

"I’ll be telling all my friends to come here," says John H. Thomas.

I don't get why this is a bad thing. It only applies to low level misdomeanors and the NYPD has said numerous times that it is not a blanket amnesty.

Its builds trust in a department with a horrible reputation in this area and let's people get on with their lives.

A couple hundred thousand warrants for arrest? Wowza.

Wonder if those warrants cover only about 50k different people. Assholes who cuss at cops or are too dumb to not get caught drinking in public are bound to get arrested for chicken-shit more than once.

It's turning churches into a wing of the judicial branch.

    http://pix11.com/2013/03/29/brooklyn-church-to-absolve-warrants-along-with-sins/

What's funny is that; the second that the same thing happens in a local mosque, millions will be outraged.

Maybe, just maybe, misdemeanors shouldn't be enforce or thrown out in the same building that preaches that we're all inbred, wearing mixed garments is punishable by death, the Earth is 5,000 years old and the first woman was pulled from a rib. And maybe, just maybe, there shouldn't be African dancers dancing while you plead your case.

Merging government and church....what could possibly go wrong!?

It's a bad thing because people who commit small crimes and get away with them are emboldened and then move on to bigger crimes. That's why Giuliani went after the petty criminals - he figured that if you got the small time criminals off the street before they mature, the city will be safer as a whole.

Were all of the white people turned away, or weren't they amongst the hundreds of thousands of people with warrants for arrest?

Hey, now we will give you free stuff AND you can be a criminal without penalty. Welcome to the further erosion of America. The list of forgivable offenses is too long:

    · Unlawful possession of Alcohol under age 21

    · Consumption of Alcohol in Public

    · Aggressive Solicitation

    · Unlawful possession of handcuffs

    · Littering

    · Riding a bicycle on the sidewalk

    · Making unreasonable noise

    · Animal nuisance

    · Failure to have a dog license

    · Unleashed dog

    · Spitting

    · Saying "axe" in place of "ask"

    · Trespassing

    · Shooting some white guy

    · Disorderly conduct

    · Loitering

    · Pants on the ground

    · Unlawfully in a park after hours

    · Failure to comply with posted signs in park

    · Stealing Tide detergent

    · That ain't yo car, bitch

    · Marijuana possession

    · Smoking marijuana

Being near the top of the heap, Giuliani would know all about the levels of criminals.

It wasn't about safer streets, it was about eliminating the competition.

Exactly, it's fine to break the law so long as it's not an IMPORTANT law.

And hey, black people don't need to pay their tickets, either. Just wait around until the next amnesty, and show up to have a black judge forgive your fines/crimes.

We are on a very slippery slope in this nation.
