I am. I'm new at it, but I like it. I teach language arts classes at a community college. I don't know enough about the union yet to really comment about it. Plus I think the impact of teachers' unions are different at college levels than at k-12.

Save for your own retirements and contribute to your health benefits like everyone else who has to work 12 mos a year you lazy union swine.

(only for teachers who are in a union, receive a pension, and like those in my state, contribute $0 toward their health insurance)

I've been an English teacher in Japan for 11 years now. I teach high school (which here is grades 10-12). I love my job, for the most part. It's fun and rewarding, and I think I'm pretty good at it. No union here, though.

I might as well be the one to ask it...
Ever been attracted to a student? Ever act on it? Ever have a student flirt with you? Ever seen a coworker in a dicey situation?

I, too, was surprised to find a couple more people who I didn't know were teachers.

I posted about this many times around here already, but for you @sstressed , anything. :D

I taught for over 20 years, almost all of those in kdg, and in the worst ghetto in our city. The only thing I ever wanted to be, since I was IN kdg., was a kdg. teacher. I LOVED my job, right up until all the politics ruined it. I "retired" 3 years ago from the classroom, but last year I accepted a consulting-type position with my old district. Best job I've ever had. I make my own hours, work as much or as little as I want, and I'm still getting to spend time with the babies, without all the bullshit that now comes along with the job. It's a win-win for me!

As far as the union goes, all I'll say about that is ours sucks, and never helped me in any way. The only thing they were good for was taking $65 dollars out of each check for dues. And, yes, we HAVE to join. And, NO, it doesn't help you get ahead.

The "youff" today, at least where I taught, are doomed. I'll just leave it at that because it's Saturday morning, and I don't feel like climbing up on my soapbox. :rolleye:

And, finally, yes I get head, but I give better than I get. Did I miss any of your questions, sstressed? :bigthink

I've seen coworkers in dicey situations, but not with students. Does that count? :dontknow:

My neighbors wife is a teacher.

There's no shortage of teachers around for the parties and get togethers and whatnot.

I've found most of the teachers to be very fun people who like to let loose and party.

I know that 3 of them recently earned their Masters Degrees and automatically got substantial raises due to that.

How many hours a week do you work? A light week for my wife (a teacher) is 60 hours. I'd compare the amount of hours she works in a year to most people any time. Furthermore, teachers are well educated professionals. My wife has two masters degrees. She has been to countless conferences and has read countless professional books. And if you think you would last a week stuck in a room with 30 kids all day, guess again.

I don't know about your state but I've contributed 11% of every single one of my paychecks whether I wanted to or not.

You didn't even bother to mention how much money she spends out-of-pocket for her classroom. I used to average about $10,000 a year. No, that's NOT a typo. Remember, I worked in the heart of the ghetto. We had NOTHING. Plus, the parents didn't get anything for their kids. Not a crayon, not a pencil, not a piece of paper, NOTHING. And I always had closer to 40 kids in my class. Guess who used to buy them hats and gloves and scarves, too, in the winter when they'd come to school in a hoodie?

Ok, I'm fighting the urge to climb up on my soapbox, so I'll just go away now....
