    If you respect the law, no, you can't just assault people. What you can do is effect a citizen's arrest. When he resists, and you are forced to defend yourself, then you can beat the shit out of him.

    Unless you're the shopkeeper, it seems silly to put yourself at risk for a bigger criminal punishment than that of the shoplifter

    I was arrested for shoplifting as a teenager. I was honestly otherwise the epitome of a "good girl". I was part of a group of girls who thought it was exhilarating and fun. I tried it once and failed and then "succeeded" the time I got pinched by the popo :giggle:. I was the only who got caught. :nocheer: No explanation for it even after all these years. We were all raised better and have all gone to live very respectable adult lives. We've talked about it and have no insight into our teenage selves. We'd all be absolutely horrified if our own children did it.

    Sometimes kids do very stoopid things. I did learn my lesson though and was terrified to even get caught drinking in my college dorm.
