I was at a store this morning and the Haji behind the counter asked a black woman for ID....She kind of lost it.

Saying.... no one, anywhere cards her. "Black people can't have credit cards? Blah Blah, I work in manhattan and they don't ID me!" She opened her wallet and showed her various credit cards..."I have all of them!"

She seemed liked a fairly sophisticated woman(she was buying hair extensions though..lol). Oh and it was an American Express card

Serious question, was she correct in making a stink about it? I actually felt bad for her....But then the Haji said, they lose a lot of money in fraud....confusing

I'm a cash and debit person...so clue me in. Who was wrong?

Yes, everywhere lately, even places we are known. Any time we use a credit card.

If someone passes a stolen credit card off, does the store owner take the loss?

I get asked all the time for my id when using my credit card, I consider it a safe guard for my self. In fact I used to write ask for id on the signature line just to protect myself.

However, in this case, if they didn't ask for an id from the white woman in front of her she might have a gripe.

...it might be inconvenient and all that but i think theyre protecting you from future hassles but mostly theyre trying to protect the cc company who would have to absorb fraud charges. when and if im asked for i.d. i just give it to them but i understand how a person can feel insulted by it.

I don't know, but it might be that they get their money immediately when you do it that way.

You're foolish for using a debit card. When the number gets stolen, that's your money that gets stolen with it not citibank's.

That's what I thought. You do not have the protection of the credit card.

I rarely use a debit card and only when in a major grocery store when I may need cash back.

Rarely asked for ID since I look like Rupet Pupkin. If the name on my credit card said 'Leroy Washington', perhaps asking me for ID would be appropriate.

Some people I know write "Check ID" on the back of their credit cards instead of signing their name.

Instead of signing them, I write SEE ID on the back of my credit and debit card, with a magic marker, so it is very obvious what it says.

Maybe 5% of the time, someone will ask to see my drivers license. Most cashiers look at the CC, ignore what it says, and run it anyways.

It's usually restaurants that ask to see the ID, and they are almost always apologetic about asking. I'll thank them for asking, and tell them I wouldn't have written it there, if I did not want them to ask.
